the missing link in p2p is almost always missing implementations or "its a research problem". conceptually, distributed systems can be more fault tolerant, but, from an engineering perspective, they are much more difficult to do correctly.
federated (decentralized) systems, tend to be easier to design and deploy. there are missing implementations here as well, but they can be much easier to build and often perform better (especially when it comes to mobile).
