Ability for a user to join the discussion, but not vote.
The story: a small team working on a project that wants its community to be able to join the discussion, but not be involved in actual decision making unless they have gained the right.
There are times that when a new person is involved, you don't want to give him the ability to be able to vote on decisions, but he is welcomed to join the discussion and express his opinion on the subject.
Especially when you don't know the person who requests to join, he is not part of the team, but the person has shown an interest in contributing in discussion and join the team in the future.
This way you can open up the Loomio group to more people and have more people contribute to the discussion, but only those that are in the actual team will be able to vote.
Absolutely!
great idea!
It would be good to be able to invite "expert witnesses" in to the group, maybe no vote but active in their contribution.
As they say, experts on tap, not on top.
Great idea @gilesgibson ! We've seen this work in discussions before.
Stupid question time and probably in the wrong forum...
Can you invite people to join just the one discussion rather than the entire group? If there is a discussion going and some external input would help then adding in a non-voting (or voting in some cases) member to that discussion would be great.
Also, is it possible to have more than one proposal in a discussion? If not how do you manage different ideas?
Is there an area on Loomio that has groups that are public, have been searching around but cannot find how to get there. Apologies if under my nose.
I realise that these kind of new user questions should live somewhere, struggling to find out where though.
@gilesgibson Certainly not stupid questions! We're developing 'invite to discussion' right now. I expect it will be ready in a few weeks.
Here's one way we think we might handle multiple proposals: https://www.loomio.org/discussions/6413
You can see public groups here: https://www.loomio.org/groups/
Agreed re. new user questions & answers. Where would you expect to find them?
@matthewbartlett Thanks for getting back. Had a quick look at the ideas behind multiple proposals. The sooner we can get it up and running the better. Very slow process when everyone has to wait for the existing proposal to come to deadline time before kicking off a new one (unless I am missing something).
Thanks for the link to public groups. Interesting to see nothing comes up in searching for "local government" or "london". What does the search function search? All comments or just group descriptions?
Re: new user area - I suppose a pointer in the help menu would be good (you are now going to tell me there is one there). Also a group dedicated to new users that encourages mentors to help people along. Even pointers to groups that have a good track record of proposals, debates nd actions so people could look and learn. I need to know a bit more about the features, tips and tricks etc. People are going to ask me questions and it would be good to get to speed quicker.
@gilesgibson proposers can close proposals early, which I've noticed happens a lot when it becomes obvious that the group isn't keen on something.
That function looks at the names & group descriptions.
Have you had a chance to look at the pages Getting the most out of Loomio and Coordinating your Loomio group ?
I seem to recall @alannakrause was talking about starting a group for group coordinators to share tips etc... Alanna is that right?
@gilesgibson it occurred to me that my local city council in Wellington, NZ has a public group that was used to help develop their alcohol strategy — may be of interest: https://www.loomio.org/groups/855
+1 for comment only roles in groups - I would love this feature.
Could we get this without a new role? I mean, you can have a big group were everithing can be discussed (and voted), and a subgroup just for "the team" (visible to everyone in the parent group). It's easy to explain in the context, that the "real decissions" are taken by the team in the subgroup, while votes in the parent group are used as open surveys, proposals that come from outside, and comments for everyone to speak, and/or expert opinions.
Maybe I'm being too strict with the "keep it simple" in mind! I will not block to have more roles XD
Marry me, @zombilechuck
@richarddbartlett It's a long-distance relationship...
I lo-omio you too :)
stupid question time (apologies in advance) - being new to Loomio is there an area where the new features that have been agreed and a timetable for inclusion is listed? I would like to roll out Loomio to many more places and groups but not until a couple of features that I think are essential have been added. It may be that my preferences are not going to be added (sulks in corner), just be good to find out what is being worked on and when it may be available.
Thanks for the feedback @neophytoskolokotro. This is something that (I think) we do want to support in the future.
