[post - published] Statement after the 12/09 vote in the EU Parliament on Copyright

RVE Renaud Van Eeckhout Public Seen by 20

Today's vote was lost, and I wanted to have a reaction on that. I didn't want to make one more article about why we should have voted against, etc, this has been done by many people already and... they have not been heard.

So the draft I made is a probably more accusing than our previous statements, and the press is pointed at clearly. We cannot have a healthy debate without a press doing their job, and they didn't do it. Who is going to say it, if not us, we who were insulted by them?
So I wanted to take the opportunity to say that, and remind everyone that the fight is not lost, and even if today's vote had been a success, we would have had to keep on fighting no matter what.

Here the draft : https://pad.pirateparty.be/p/copyrightlaw-statement

There have been only minor edits in the text, and at least 3 pirates have already passed through it, so we're moving closer to publishing it. I translated (DeepL) the text in English again, so more people can read and comment. But if you want to comment, please do not wait too long, that kind of statement should normally be published quite quickly.

[FR] Il y a eu des légères modifications au texte, au moins 3 pirates ont déjà contribué, donc on se rapproche d'une publication. Si vous voulez commenter, ne trainez plus !

They are just single HTML files with some Javascript btw. But it's all in one file (and then the pics are separate ofc). You can just upload them somewhere else. Maybe somewhere on the website? Or just screencap :) No need for HTML/js then even :p I just made the HTML/js page 'cause it's a quick way to make those pages (+ if someone wants to make it pretty with css, they easily can)

The promptness of your reactions always amazes me! :astonished:

Suggestion - I am not able to write this myself as I don't know well enough: I would find useful a short summary of what was voted, in a few sentences, as an intro, so that it can understood by anyone. And then you can start pointing at the press :stuck_out_tongue:

OK so I put the article online, it will be public tomorrow at 7:30AM - you can see it in the image here.

I think all the comments/remarks made have been taken into account so far.

The meme used will be European Parliament at work / Trying hard to stop memes, but feel free to change it before the publication (I didn't see any real choice in favor of one or another). The flemish version could have another meme, maybe? It doesn't really matter, I think.

@koenvdp the text is now ready to be translated! It's the french version on the pad that needs to be translated in dutch (I left a space on the pad for that if you prefer)

Dear Renaud @vanecx , and others,
I translated the text, it's on the pad. Beware of the following things:
-I added a little information next to the rtbf-article, so that Dutch speaking persons whot do not understand French well, can read the sentence in Dutch and know what is about, also, I added that the professor who speaks is a professor at the University of Namur, so they would understand it is interesting because it is belgian related information. (but, the big majority of Flemish people is much much more familiar with english, so if a alternative in english or dutch eg could be added, that would be good)
-also, below, I added some links with information in Dutch for the use of the Dutch speaking Belgians. A Pirate who understands well Dutch could read it to control if I made a good choice with those extra links (eg, under heading "Extra info, vóór de stemming van 12/09" )
Kind regards-Koen

I read it and I love it! In the past we sometimes tried a bit to hard to make translations that where 'as close as possible' to the original. I'm glad you made an effort to make it more understandable instead, which eventually even kept more of the context as intended. It looks way more professional as well! Really nice!

Thx 😊 ! It does give me a very good feeling that you are satisfied with it; -Of course, I’m working as a professional writer for some years now, so that helps of course 😉. & concerning ‘trying to stay as close as possible to the text’: yes, it’s true, my translation is almost never 100% the same as the original -although I try to stay very close to the original. (so, if the original is not well written -which is, luckily, rare- as a consequence, sometimes the text I wrote while translating is not very well, I’ve got the impression-it all begins with a source text which is good too😊 ).

Thanks a lot @koenvdp !

I made the article, it will be automatically published tomorrow morning at 8AM, unless someone shouts and/or cancels it on the wordpress. I used Ilja's 'lobby' meme for this one. Don't forget to publish it on your favourite social networks once it's published on the wordpress.
