Accessibility feedback

ND Nolan Darilek Public Seen by 8

As I stated in my intro, I'm very impressed with Loomio's accessibility. Here are a few bits of feedback I thought I'd toss out:

  • I'm in a long thread with a "Show earlier activity" link. It's early here as I write this and I haven't yet had my coffee, but I can't seem to focus this link via tab, nor could I activate it via enter. Ultimately I had to simulate a mouse move and click, but it'd be nice if this link was in the tab focus.
  • The words "Thread title" in thread titles are a bit verbose. I haven't looked at your markup to see exactly how you're rendering this spoken text, but if you could insert a pause via punctuation (I.e. "," or ":") between the poster's name and the thread title, that should be sufficient. If I'm quickly scanning a group by tabbing, "thread title" read over and over may only take a half second or so, but that adds up, and I can generally distinguish text that should be a thread title from text that should be a user's name. :)
  • There doesn't appear to be a space after the thread title and unread count in your ARIA/spoken description. I'm hearing things like "dot 0 unread items" or "point 0 unread items" because ".0" is treated like a number and ". 0" is not. Again, haven't looked at your markup but that should be a simple change.
  • When tabbing through the group page, I hear "common.privacy.group_privacy". Is there a missing default translation somewhere?

Thanks for all of this work. I'm hitting a few other issues and am not sure if they're related to my choice of screen reader (Orca/GNOME as opposed to NVDA/Windows) so I'll likely report more once I've had time to diagnose. Related to that, is it at all possible for non-logged-in users to see the new interface? I'd like to file some Orca issues related to how it renders your new interface, and it would be nice if I didn't need to include "sign up for Loomio" as a step in the issue report. :)

Nolan, thanks for the feedback. The more users we have with different screen readers, the more problems we will catch.
1. The "Load Earlier Activity" is a bug. I was able to locate and experience the same behaviour.
2. The text "Thread title:" is repetative, and should be removed. Also, the missing spaces have been noted before, but appears still to be a problem.
3. I cannot find the “common.privacy.group_privacy” on the Group page. I have tried with Firefox and Internet Explorer. Will have to investigate more.
4. I will pass on the request for non-loged-in users.
Thanks!

Nolan, thanks for the feedback.

Loomio development has made some admirable attempts at accessibility, but the more users we get the better we will be able to advise them.

Note:

Cheers!

David

Hi @nolandarilek and @davidbest! We've implemented Nolan's feedback (thank you very much!). If you're up for it and have a spare moment, we'd love to hear if the implementation works for you!

Hannah, great work. Thanks!
Something else to consider with the Threads.
Using the Down Arrow key, the screen reader reads out the Link text properly, but when using the Tab key you get differing behaviour with Firefox and Internet Explorer.
In both browsers you get two focus points, a Link and a Checkbox.
In Firefox the Link text is repeated three times.
See attached video for a demo.

Hi David, apologies for the delayed response to your previous comment! Thanks very much for the ongoing feedback. I can't see the video you are referring to, but perhaps you could send it to me at [email protected]. Thanks again!
