EGU 2019
The deadline for session proposals is due today. It would be a great opportunity again to promote preprints. Is there a townhall meeting or something similar suggested already? @danielnust @geoda @christopherjackson1 @tomnarock1

Christopher Jackson Wed 12 Sep 2018 6:12PM
Hi @sgirardclos! I think IAS would be good, given they also have sessions on paper-writing, etc. I won't be going, but I'd be very happy to support the endevour. One of my best friends is now Editor-in-Chief of Sedimentology, so we could perhaps try and get their endorsement too, given they accept preprints. And @friedrich1: thanks for submitting the townhall proposal to EGU. Chris

Stéphanie Girardclos Wed 12 Sep 2018 7:48PM
Hi @christopherjackson3 ! Thank you for the support. You have another friend at Sedimentology -> me ! I'm Sedimentology Associate Editor
The new IAS president (D.Ariztegui) is in the office next to mine. I'll talk with him about possibilities, even better than with the Sedimentology staff. He likes the @EarthArXiv initiative and knows all about it.
For the IAS Roma I would like to do something fun.
I'm thinking of a 'Be-your-own-editor bar', i.e. proposing instantenous preprint publication (and free bier-beverage if I get a sponsor) under the motto 'I publish when I wish' (required people bring their .pdf we would announce it beforehand). I would give advice, validate submissions and answer questions.
Of course, I'll have to manage my double hat (editor here and there) but I see this all as a continuum of publication.
Any remarks/ideas from you girls and guys ? What do you think you the idea ? If anyone of you comes to IAS Roma and wishes to help, it would be great.

Christopher Jackson Wed 12 Sep 2018 7:54PM
Hi Stéphanie,
Ah, so you work with Ian Kane then?!
It’s great to hear Daniel is positive towards preprints and EarthArXiv. And I think this is an absolutely fantastic idea, which we could also work into next year’s EGU effort. Maybe even AGU, although I’m personally
not planning on going this year. I’d be happy to offer as much support as you need for the IAS plan.

Cool. I'm happy you like the idea. But I need to develop it a bit more. I'll talk to the cool young ones of my Dept to see if they adhere to the idea or have other ones regarding EarthArXiv. This year at ISC Québec there was a nice Young scientist booth where the young sedimentologists organized mini informal talks during poster sessions that was good, fun and busy.
Yes I work remotely as (not paid - to clarify) Assoc. Editor for Sedimentology but I haven't had Ian as Chief Editor yet.

I plan to come to EGU as well this year. Happy to help.
Last week I presented the concept of grassroots journals at two conferences and the feedback was positive. So I have decided to get serious and would also like to present it at EGU.
https://grassroots.is/
So we could have:
Be your own Publisher (EarthArXiv) &
Be your own Editor (Grassroots journals).
Deleted User Thu 13 Sep 2018 11:36AM
Hi Victor, good to hear that you are also going to be there. I think we can integrate the idea of grassroots into the townhall meeting, as this year we had plenty of time left.
Victor Venema Thu 13 Sep 2018 1:11PM
Wonderful. Would be great to combine. Grassroots journals by itself is still quite small in 2019. Do you have my mail? Victor.Venema@uni-bonn.de

Any plans for an EGU meeting/dinner of EA-philes?

Daniel Nüst Tue 19 Mar 2019 3:49PM
I'd like to go for dinner after the townhall.
David Sun 24 Mar 2019 12:18PM
I have a dinner arrange on Tuesday, so I hope we could do it other day, or mix them?

Christopher Jackson Mon 25 Mar 2019 8:20AM
Hi EarthArXiv,
I'll be around at EGU and could definitely do dinner after the townhall on the Tuesday evening. I've also been in touch with the Communications Officer at EGU, who has offered us a 'pop-up' slot in the ECS & Networking zone. It looks likely the slot will be Thursday at 1300. If anyone else can make it, that would be great! We could give a potted version of the main presentation, and then help people upload material, explore the site, etc. I think mentioning Plan S, etc, is a good thing, as preprints clearly have a role to play there. RE: the presentation, the attached is a version of a talk I gave to UT Austin a week or so ago. It contains the last set of statistics I had, drawn from the EOS paper, although they could be updated. Happy for feedback on this!
Chris
David Mon 25 Mar 2019 8:32AM
I'll check my planning (I'm travelling, so tomorrow) to see if I can make this. Even if not possible for me, I can do something similar in an informal manner while in the ECS area. I'm supposed to be there in my "free time" during the meeting (becoming representative this year)
Deleted User Mon 25 Mar 2019 9:46AM
Sorry Chris, I cant see the presentation you attached. Can you upload it in a different way?

Its time to update the presentation. Can anyone provide the new statistics? Do you feel anything was missing last year (presentation can be found here: https://eartharxiv.github.io/resources.html)?
I would then update the presentation next week and ask for feedback again.

I think it could be interesting / start a discussion if we mention a few things that have happened during the last year, such as Coalition S, the developments of the Open Science MOOC, the ongoing disruption of academic publishing, ...

Great idea Daniel. Definitely a good way to lead over to discussion. Could you put togetheer a few slides?

Unfortunately, I have to say "no" to that, at least for the next two weeks. Sorry, will get in touch if that changes.

Daniel Nüst Mon 25 Mar 2019 2:50PM
Did you guys all get an invite to the conveners reception on Friday? If not and if you're still at EGU on Friday evening, I'm happy to put one of you down as my guest. Just let me know soon.

Thanks Tom, but how do I download/view the file on Github? Sorry, github novice here...:-(
Tom Narock Mon 25 Mar 2019 7:52PM
There's a "Download" button halfway down the page, on the right.
Victor Venema Mon 25 Mar 2019 8:25PM
Looks good. Thanks for preparing the slides. Unfortunately I will not be at EGU this year.
Only noticed a minor point: slide 25 with all the open science stages is missing preprinting. We could see it as part of publishing. Then I would add our logo there.

Thanks Tom for the updates! I scanned the presentation as well and added and deleted some minor things. I think when @geoda supplied the new Twitter-slides we should be ready to go!

Well well... Thats what EGU send this morning. Find the error: "Poster authors can upload their poster PDF to the community preprint server ESSOAr, the Earth and Space Science Open Archive, at https://www.essoar.org."

Christopher Jackson Wed 17 Apr 2019 12:14PM
🤔
Victor Venema Wed 17 Apr 2019 1:32PM
ESSOAr hosts posters, we are somehow more restrictive. I personally wish we were not. See discussion on software papers and reproduction papers. Also reports would be fine by me. As long as it is Earth Science.

Christopher Jackson Wed 17 Apr 2019 8:32PM
ESSOAr are essentially a poster archive; they have c. 840 submissions, of which c. 790 are posters...In that respect, we have a clear identity, although we could indeed move onto their turf @victorvenema by accepting posters. My personal preferences remains to keep crafting our own identify. Indeed, the Advisory Board are actively discussing accepting software. It looks likely this will happen, so we'll let everyone know when we are ready for additional input. Thanks!
Victor Venema Wed 17 Apr 2019 8:37PM
What are the consideration? What are the positives about being restrictive with the types of texts we allow?
I would like to see science move away from the idea that the only thing that counts is an article. So I see value in accepting any scientifically valuable text the system can handle. (I guess interactive labnotebooks would be a technical challenge. )

Bruce Caron Wed 17 Apr 2019 9:35PM
Also, the ESSOAr poster UX is horrible... they have done the bare minimum for the user. You can't see the poster unless you download it (on the up-side, this pads the download metrics  ). They only post the text of the abstract... with no attempt to pull text from the poster that might be of value for your search... and no attempt to handle any of the graphics on their side either. The poster is just this BLOB you can download to look at. And they paid Wiley for their closed platform. Probably not a lot of innovation pathways in front of them. Figshare has a much better UX.
