Is this the right time for a global democracy?
We are an increasingly global civilization. Over the course of our history we have progressed from small tribes to large nations, creating ingenious new ways to cooperate in ever larger groups. Now we have am international culture facing common economic, social and environmental problems. The need to transition from separate national governments to a strong international governance system is pressing. But is it politically feasible? Is a global democracy possible within the next few decades? What would it take to convince world powers that it's in their interest to form a fully functioning global democracy?

The sooner, the better. Yes, let's do it.
We know what to do. The Earth Constitution is ready to go. We must put in the building blocks called for by the Earth Constitution now as we go on the offensive to replace the UN Charter with the Earth Constitution.

What is the Earth Constitution? I would like to know more about that.
Dr. Roger Kotila Sat 10 Oct 2015 2:28PM
The Earth Constitution is the basis for the Earth Federation Movement. It was written by almost 1000 world citizens (visionaries) over a period of 30 years. It calls for a World Parliament, democratically elected. It will create a world federal union government. It's the first "green constitution" ever drafted. www.earthfederation.info will direct you to the Constitution itself, & to the Provisional World Parliament.
Recommend that you validate your own hopes and ideas by citing the appropriate section of the Earth Constitution. "We, the people" should build an Earth Federation (Movement) in case the UN is unable, or unwilling, to transform itself under the Earth Constitution. The time is ripe for the world community to step in to geopolitical action...using the Earth Constitution for moral authority, for leadership, and as a guide.

Thank you Dr. Kotila. Have had a look at the website, and look forward to getting more and more familar with the whole project, and being a part of the conversation and the work.

That's great that you are interested in joining the cause. It is
in harmony with One Global Democracy.
We have room for ideas that improve the Constitution via an amendment
process, but we feel that, as it stands right now, the Earth Constitution is
strong enough to inspire and to give hope to the world community. We hope
the youth begin to grasp what we are doing, and join in.
An emerging Earth Federation movement could be a very big deal indeed,
especially if we capture the imagination of young people in the US, Europe,
Asia, Africa, South America, etc.
My best,
Roger Kotila

Yes this is the right time and in my opinion we are even late in some sense. However perception around the world concerning this, and especially in Africa and Asia-Pacific that together makes 75% of humankind, changes a lot. Basically the most enthusiastic people for global democracy are found in the Western English speaking countries followed by rest of Europeans and Latin Americans. So in this sense one of my concerns is about if and how to work and discuss the idea of a plural world identity, so that it helps many people to open their minds about discussing if it is the time or not. Here you can find a short note (in Spanish only by now) about this topic: http://www.world-governance.org/article1267.html

Maybe something that could get more buy in from more people outside the so called 'western democracies' would be if there were principles built very explicitly in to the constitution that would prevent any kind of centralization of power.
Because, I think you are going to run quickly into a perception of a world government being just a more expedient way for the global south to get fucked by the global north even worse than they are now.

I agree with your 1st point. Maybe we should work in highlighting values and examples coming from the different cultures. But those who goes in direction to more democracy (the tradition of local assemblies or courts exists in many countries under different names, visions and missions). And yes, a world government (a cabinet with some few elected people) can be a great danger in my opinion, not only for the South but for the North itself. So I prefer a kind of global collaborative network open to the participation of everybody in taking decisions and implementing them.

Its absolutely the right time to start moving toward it, yes. We couldnt flip a switch right now, but pushing it into the open through formal political parties and so forth is I think the absolute best next step we can take.
