Trees :o)

S Sally Public Seen by 12

I shared our mega plan with a friend and we have just been offered some money from Forest for Cornwall for tree planting this winter :o)

Need to get some ideas and plans together quite quickly - any ideas (including source, number and cost) below please.....

Will add details/ budget etc. when I have them

Rad!

I think it would be great to grow Santa Rosa plums(or equivalent) and some russet apples. Do we have the specs for the space that’s allocated ?i.e meters in length/ number of rows space between rows?

Or do we need to measure it? Might be able to measure stuff tomorrow afternoon if it’s needed!

Cheers

Liz

Nice! I was also thinking of putting in an application for woodland trust trees for the hedging we want to do - can get either 105 or 420 and I like the look of wild harvest option - elder, hawthorn, Rowan, hazel, blackthorn, crabapple, dogrose.... We'd get the trees in March

Ah I see- is the funding for hedge row rather than Orchard planting?

I can get together a plan for the tree rows within the 'market garden' area - dya reckon shrubs (eleagnus) count as trees?

Confirmation that fruit trees count will be useful too!

@Liz Band i've not heard of santa rosa plums, but could consider putting them in the fruiting tree rows within the market garden if they're good!

They are good- not sure if that variety will be available here but am sure there’s a uk equivelant. Happy to do do research if there’s not fruit expert amongst us!

Think hedge, fruit trees, eleagnus etc anything - but will update you as soon as I have more detail. She reckoned about £2k might be possible :o)

Here's a shared spreadsheet that I have started with species, varieties, prices and source: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rJAW4EaTCgFhZpE6ibCC3Kh0XScZpX7zvXwL0hVcFQ4/edit#gid=0

Hey Tree friendssss, I've added a new sheet onto the original Excel tree doc my planning and brainworks for the edible hedgerows that are going to be in the Market Garden if anyone is interested in that.

I also calculated that if topfruit trees cost ~£15, and Nitrogen Fixing Eleagnus/Sea buckthorn ~£10. Then a rough tree cost for the market garden forest garden hedgerows is £390. We may be able to get cheaper pricing if organised directly through Adamsapples, and if Ben donated some Eleagnus plants.

Hey all, Finn and me have come up with the following draft plan for trees - we are a bit over budget at the moment - we have about £2k.. But I think we can reduce the hedge/ windbreak costs. We need to share with Forest for Cornwall and get it officially approved but have the ok to start ordering some of the ones that will sell out - so will try and get some ordered later this week. I will aim to send the completed plan to Steph at Forest for Cornwall later this week as well- so have a look and add/ change/ suggest - you will need to check availability on any suggestions though as things are selling out. I have also shared this with Pete.... xx
