Admin panel: group request approval process

We've been looking at how to streamline the group request approval process.

You can see our full brain-dump here but the main takeouts are here:

Changes to the admin side

  • Need to be able to increase the group max_size on existing groups
  • Need to know which groups have been approved but not set up (membership count = 0)
  • Would be good to have the admin email address on the admin/group_request page (rather than having to click in to 'View group_request').

Changes to the user side

We talked about modifying the process somewhat, a la @mattlemmon's recent suggestion.

The ideas is that when a user completes the request process, they are directed to a page saying something like: "Thank you for your request, you should have received an email from contact@loomio.org confirming that we've received your request. If you don't receive this email within 5 minutes, please check your spam folder. If you're still having problems, please get in touch - contact@loomio.org."

This is good feedback for the user, and helps us identify potential spam-filtering problems early.

Does this sound vaguely like we're on the right track?

We've also got some work to do on the actual Group Request Form, I've got some suggestions to make for that which should be ready tomorrow :)

@umaholla suggests it would also be useful to track which groups have had their max_size increased. What do you think @jonlemmon?

Jon Lemmon

@richarddbartlett @umaholla there's not a very easy/elegant way to track that at the moment. Which means that we'll need to think of a better way of tracking metrics eventually. @matthewbartlett

@jonlemmon Couldn't that action (max_size getting increased) just be recorded as an event?

Jon Lemmon

It could, however I'm cautious about adding in extra events which aren't directly related to the functionality of the app. Our event system is for the app, and we're bootstrapping it to work as a metrics tracking system. My gut says we shouldn't start adding in non-app-related events, and instead move toward a better logging system. Though I'm happy to be convinced otherwise.

@robertguthrie might have thoughts on the matter...

*move toward a better logging system for metrics that we're tracking

Richard D. Bartlett

one crucial metric that I don't know how we should track is 'high-touch' vs 'low-touch'. i.e. some groups get dropped in the app, some get their hands held.
