What data should we ask IRD to provide for GovHack?

Earnings per degree. E.g. Auckland University, B Com 1977 - mean earnings in 2013: $87,481.00. Auckland Uni, LLB 1984 - mean earnings 2013: $88,888.00 ....

Obviously if the number of individuals in any degree enrollment year is less than X (say 20) then no details are provided for privacy reasons. Information available via data matching of Student Loan accounts and Income tax accounts.

Interesting idea Doug! Do student loan and tax accounts record degree type? Or would we need to also use data from the education sector?

IRD wont have degree info, but they do have the student loan identifier and so this would need to matched with information from the tertiary sector.

It is a useful start but is really too general to be much help. Perhaps take a look at https://unistats.direct.gov.uk/Compare-Courses ( https://unistats.direct.gov.uk/Compare-Courses ) as an alternative.

In addition, the NZ site jumps into detail in some areas without any background, for example, it lists four different "computing" areas, Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems and Other Information Technology without any explanation of how these terms differ. Interestingly, the only one that suggests Programmer as a possible job outcome is Other Information Technology. How would a prospective student tie these four terms into the courses offered at (say) Auckland Uni, AUT and Massey Albany?

It would be much more useful to have a single, wide category (say Computing) at the top level and then drop into actual, specific courses at the different NZ universities in this area.

To push this home, say I am a prospective student and I decide (for some weird reason) that I want to study in the area of Other Information Technology (highest salary and highest employment of the four, two years after graduation), then which degree courses at Auck Uni, AUT and Massey should I be considering?
