Combine the discussions!

Today i saw that is missing one option, that which allow coordinators to combine discussions.

To specify little more:

We had one discussion opened before 2 months, and we haven't say much because we working these 2 months a full proposal for the application of the direct democracy in Greece and suddenly 1 member starts new discussion with a proposal. But now we have 2 same discussions, and it is right to delete neither of these because in 1 we had some serious dialogue and in other there is a proposal that already some members have voted.

Now my proposal is:

The coordinators to have also the option not only to edit or move the discussion but also to combine it with an older, even if there is an active proposal.

Also the last on date context stays as primary and the votes of the active proposal are not lost.

Can this happen??? I mean technically!

Matthew Bartlett

Interesting idea, @christaklis. I'm sure it's possible technically, but I wonder how it could be done in a way that was not confusing & didn't misrepresent the 'historical record'. After two discussions were combined, where would you imagine the older discussion's context & past proposals would go? What happens if there is some overlap in the timings of comments (i.e. the older discussion finishing in June 2013, and the newer starting in April 2013)?

Chris Taklis

it must has history revision and there can say that is moved from another topic. Then i don't think it will be overlap in the timings of comments because each comment has the time that has posted.

Let me propose a workaround... (See my proposal)

Move to the other thread

It was just a visual example

Some of us moved to https://www.loomio.org/discussions/XXXXX
In a week 26-11-2013 this thread will be erased by the coordinator, the discussion will be stored in plain text and uploaded for further revision in the new thread.
Block if you really disagree.

Agree

I agree myself

@zombilechuck but what happens if there are previous proposals in the old discussion?

PauKokura

Maybe you can insert them as an image in the new thread explaining it, and propose the rest to repeat some if the new thread has new participants or they consider not legitimate decisions.

Chris Taklis

i say that @zombilechuck because in our group Pirates of Hellas, the decisions we take we keep the link of the proposals and we put it in our wiki or in social media, and all that will be lost if we put it only in images. we won't have archive of our proposals!

I think it must be something more automatically!

Alanna Irving

I agree this is something that comes up quite a bit for group coordinators. I encounter it a lot here in the Loomio Community as well. I am not sure what the right design is to solve the problem... merging threads is one idea. Having the system automatically suggest similar existing threads when you try to submit a new on, and suggest you post in them instead, is another.

For now I'm going to move this discussion into Feature Ideas.
