Spring Tournament

CW Claire Wilson Public Seen by 22

Discussing the format and details of Spring tournament. Slated for 12th of September. Best to start discussion early so we can get things planned in advance and avoid the last-minute planning rush. It would be nice to have the format and branding pinned down by the end of June so we can open rego in July.

Getting this started. I have a proposal:
Since it'll be warming up to qualifiers. Let's make this a competitive 3 team tournament. Also, there's no Australasians this year, so we're lacking a big tournament. What about two courts at flagstaff running north west. They'll be a little skinny, but means we can have lots of teams and lots of polo.

If we get on this quick and start setting up an awesome tourney and sell it we could get a really big turn out.

This may be more suited to Christmas (which has traditionally been a less serious, more fun focused tournament). But the idea for a random rule tournament was discussed recently.

Before each game an additional rule would be selected form a hat/spun on a giant wheel, and the game would be played accordingly. This would a) be a lot of fun, and b) give us a great opportunity to trial new rules.

As an example, the random rules could be things like:

  • shuffle goals count
  • 4 players per team - goal scorer rotates off
  • no stationary goalies
  • silent polo - no calling for the ball or communicating with your team
  • flat pedals only

etc etc.

I reckon a 3v3 serious tournie...

As for help, I volunteer my time for muscle in setting up, gathering materials etc

Also jumping on the serious tournie bandwagon (either bench or 3v3, probably 3v3 seeing as some teams will be preparing for NZ by then). Clearly there is the demand for a tournie with a high level of competition so lets cater for that. 1 court would mean games can be of a decent standard, and the tournament can be properly run and reffed for a smaller than normal number of teams.
Happy to run a cafe and see the serious players have a seriously awesome tournie.
Would be keen to see xmas as a really big open to everyone superfun tournie for all abilities. Two courts would be great to make sure all teams get enough game time while including more teams.

Time to get the ball rolling a bit more seriously on this event people. Please add your voice to my proposal!

Let's start with the most basic format decisions. I propose the following:
- 3 players per team
- Unlimited goals
- Bayesian swiss followed by groups then single slim

I would prefer a 5 person bench. I enjoy them more, and I think we should aim for the best tournament regardless of the context

Things to think seriously about over the weekend:
- Can we commit to having two courts with full height boards?
- How many teams should we cap it at?
