Data on birthplace is used to develop, monitor, and evaluate settlement programmes for immigrants, and analyse their socio-economic status and demographic characteristics. Government agencies and researchers widely use it, and it is of considerable interest to immigrant groups themselves. It is particularly important given increases in immigration to New Zealand in recent years.
Our current recommendations relating to birthplace
- We recommend that birthplace be included with no changes in the 2018 Census.

A reminder to those interested in data on birthplace that the online engagement process will finish in conjunction with the closing date for formal submissions on 30th June 2015. Please note that your best opportunity for influencing and helping shape the content of the 2018 Census is to make a formal submission. Statistics NZ welcomes feedback on their current recommendation that birthplace is included with no changes in the 2018 Census.
