4. Which option for the size of SA2 would best meet your data needs?

We need to optimise the size of the SA2 geography, in terms of population, so that data suppression is minimised for key population, census and business statistics.

We must also consider existing confidentiality rules when deciding on size requirements for SA2.

We propose two options for the size of the SA2 geography:
• SA2 option 1: 1,000–2,000 usual resident population count per SA2 (based on option 1 for size of SA1 geography)
• SA2 option 2: 2,700–4,000 usual resident population count per SA2 (based on option 2 for size of SA1 geography).

Both options will allow the release of information with minimal loss due to confidentiality protection for key outputs. These options will also address the issues identified with the current area unit geography.

Because the SA2 will be built upon the SA1 geography, the recommended thresholds for SA1 need to be considered
• SA1 option 1: 0 or 100–200 usual resident population count
• SA1 option 2: 0 or 400–500 usual resident population count.

I actually like to have the first option of SA2 as it is flexible. However, because I chose Option 2 for SA1, I would have to chose Option 2 for SA2.
