Welcome @wolftune, and thank you for providing an introduction!

I’m co-founder of Snowdrift.coop, a sustainable Free/Libre/Open focused fundraising system run as a co-op. I’ve been interested in Loomio since I first heard about it many months ago. We’d like to partner and get Loomio to be a project we help fund. I’ve also engaged with some of the other Enspiral folks already and other mutual connections.

As a co-op ourselves, we’re interested in the best tools for decision-making.

Great to have you as part of this community - looking forward to interesting conversations!

Welcome @joemitchell1!

One of your many funders! Dreamer of digital democracy dreams. Keen to help out Loomio where I can.

Please feel free to share your dreams with us :)

JM

Joe Mitchell Thu 23 Oct 2014 10:58AM

Thanks Hannah! What an extraordinary group of people! (Loomins? Like Moomins?)

Well, the dreams are of global digital democracy.

Plenty of folks - from Ancient Greeks to medieval theologians to modern scholars in the postwar-moment - have dreamed about global democracy. But I think we're just starting to see how it might actually be possible. Not through a world parliament - another representative body distant from its people - but through constant debate, engagement and participation online.

Loomio is the sort of tool that allows us to reimagine global political decision-making. It's exciting! And, I think, a key to solving some of the great global challenges - climate change, poverty, inequality, and so on.

So no pressure Loomins!

Good luck! And keen to help out in anyway I can.

P.S. If you're interested in the idea of global digital democracy, I've put together a quick presentation here: http://www.slideshare.net/j0e_m/global-digital-democracy-16975729

Welcome @jeandaniel ! thanks for such an epic introduction, I'll paste what you've written here for everyone to see. Feel free to let us know what else you'd like to connect with people about. thanks!

"Who am i? Well, first, I’m an admirer. I admire what Loomio has achieved so far in terms of a container and process to allow groups, teams, communities to agree on goals, challenges or solutions that they care about.

Also I admire the level of penetration you have already achieved. That’s great momentum.

I admire the social enterprise orientation as well. Your minds and hearts are in the right place.

I’m also a designer of online deliberation processes, and I have a few ideas that could be useful for the Loomio road map - it’s got such a head start, it makes sense to contribute that way rather than to reinvent stuff for nothing.

I have many backgrounds all vying for attention here.
- I am a business management consultant helping organizations become more effective at what they want to be, do, have.
- I am a cyberneticist in that I use Beer’s Viable Systems Model to diagnose dysfunctions in organizational processes and structure, and resolve them to maximize their viability.
- Until recently I was the architect of the e-Deliberation process, an on-line group deliberation platform.
- I also work with poverty stricken communities to help them bootstrap themselves unto a better place.
- I am remodeling the maple kitchen cabinets in my house on Vancouver Island, Canada. :)"

Hello Loomites, or loomers, or loominosos or what have you, and thanks to @benjaminknight for the invite. i'm a digital video producer, both inside and outside of corporate structures and systems. i've launched various products over the years, including huff post live on the west coast of the US and various video channels, jash.com, vogue.com, wired.com etc. etc.

looking forward to seeing what can be done to make this the strongest collaboration tool in the world. i'm a more-features person, so that's probably what you're going to hear from me.

MJK

Hi @robertgreen. Welcome to the network! I'm a team member based in Providence, RI and working on strategy, funding and growth. I hear often that we need to do better/more story telling. It'd be amazing to capture digital stories from users around the world. Your thoughts?

RG

robert green Fri 21 Nov 2014 7:34PM

hello @mjkaplan and thanks for the welcome! what would be of greatest benefit to Loomio's funding and growth in the short term would be a video that shows how loomio is being used in the "real world" right now. the power of this tool is in its use cases, and its use cases are exciting, interesting, and compelling. making this connection would be easy--using user-generated and found and news footage mixed with testimonials...8 or 9 minutes later, you have something pretty exceptional.

but i would say that. i produce video for a living! as they say: "to a hammer every problem looks like a nail."

MJK

Mary Jo Kaplan Fri 21 Nov 2014 9:03PM

Thanks @robertgreen for your quick and thoughtful reply. How feasible is iit to produce this with low/no budget? The value would be enormous but our resources are spread thin right now.

RG

robert green Fri 21 Nov 2014 9:11PM

@mjkaplan it's probably one editor, one researcher, and one VO artist. you need to get the research done by someone for free inside loomio & friends, and the VO could be done by a Loomio person as well, so it just comes down to a REALLY good editor's time. i can ask around and see what i come up with, but assume you will have to pay that person something.

if you don't want to show this video on youtube or in public (e.g. if it is only for potential investors, embedded in a deck and so on) then you are able to use any images and music/sounds without licensing issues, so that's worth considering as well.

Hey @alandavison welcome to the community and thanks for sharing :)

My name is Clark and I live in the UK.

I was looking for an open source or low-cost tool to facilitate group discussion, voting and decision making. Having drawn a blank I stumbled across Loomio. As a Software / Network Engineer who specialized in User Interface Design and testing many years ago I was very impressed with the early beta and became a supporter through the crowdfunding campaign.

Very much looking forward to testing the mobile version and putting it to good use for local (to me) SocEnt and non-profit purposes, and of course recommending the platform to commercial organisations wherever possible in the hope that they will “pay what they can” to help keep this excellent resource free.

Hi Rich,

I have been looking forward to testing this early release for ages, November seemed to go so slowly for me but I doubt that was the case in "Loomio Land".

I have also been reading through the Future Funding topic, there is so much to read I have not yet worked my way through it all. I do have some ideas for revenue streams but will finish reading the topic before posting.

Just a quick question :

Do you have rough numbers for the number of people using Loomio on a country by country basis, for example here in the UK? This may hemp me to flesh out my "Funding" ideas.

Thanks again for all your hard work.

Clark.

Thanks, Alanna and Greg! Greg and I have been administrators at the Bridge the Divide (BTD) Discussion Group for a year and a half. We have recently helped steer our fellow administrators away from authoritarian-style leadership, and want to encourage the group to be horizontally run. We understand the limitations of Facebook groups, and are interested in exploring various platforms, as well as theory related to consensus-style management and group process. Our experiences with the BTD group inform our views. Greg has some especially exciting project ideas, and I'm very interested in helping with what he's developing.

My background is in Library and Information Science. I have a masters degree in this subject, and in my past life (before staying at home with my three young kids) I worked for seven years as a University Librarian and Archivist at the University of Detroit Mercy, in Detroit, MI. I also have a bachelors degree in English. One of my most passionate guiding principles is upholding intellectual and academic freedom. I'm radically anti-censorship and in 2012, in a pivotal event for me personally, was actively involved in opposing book banning at my kids' high school. I love seeking truth (lifelong learning) and helping others achieve self actualization. I believe that everyone has something unique to teach me. The Loomio community might well be a good fit for me, and I'm excited to learn more about it.

Thanks for your warm welcome, @alanna! I learned about Loomio at an Impossible hackathon at UC Berkeley last fall and I'm excited to join the community of users.

My group house of five has been unable to schedule a house meeting in the last several months, so I'm grateful for Loomio's public launch. It is serving as an appropriate venue for us to engage in some consensus-based decision-making as we express our needs and resolve our frustrations at home.

Professionally, I coach Mac users at all levels and I have developed a good reputation for providing useful UI and UX feedback on new apps. Last year I completed my MBA in Design Strategy at California College of the Arts.

Hi!
thanks for accepting my request!
We're a newly born italian non profit association "Staisinergico" (www.staisinergico.it - still in progress). Our association works on the themes of coworking, sharing economy, social innovation.
As we're spread all over the region Apulia and I personally live and work in Berlin, we have been looking for a platform that could improve our workflow, communications and decisional process. I found out about Loomio through the CAPS2020 platform and i thought it was great: therefore we created a Staisinergico group and are now in the process of beginning to work on some projects using Loomio!
Looking forward for more to come!! and collaborate with you, from the user point of view, in improving it!
Cheers
Enrica

One of the suggestion is if you could create a schedule time table voting area. That would be great. Like for example, Doodle...

I'm really exited by this angular angular version ;) But it's still quite buggy. I've reported bugs to github as I know the tool pretty well but maybe it would be nice to provide a way for non techy people to submit theirs and suggestion in a easy way, no? Maybe It exist and missed it?

Congratz for all the work though, it rocks :)

RG

Robert Guthrie Fri 9 Jan 2015 9:24PM

Thanks Boris. Glad to hear you're excited about it. We're still on holiday in NZ - we know there are a lot of the issues with the system, there is still quite a lot of development to go . Because of this, individual bug reports at this stage might not be so useful, but we do appreciate the effort and support.

SP

Steve Phillips / @elimisteve Fri 9 Jan 2015 9:34PM

@robertguthrie Bug reports aren't useful at this stage? Why would that be? Thanks.

RG

Robert Guthrie Fri 9 Jan 2015 9:53PM

In short - it's not the feedback we feel is useful at this stage.

There is work involved in keeping up with them (bug reports). A lot of what you see in the angular version is not what we want it to be - meaning we still have some very important pieces of functionality to add.

We think that we know what most of the bugs are already - we're using this ourselves.

In any case we're not really interested in the bugs we don't know about until all the major functionality is in there. If we look at them we're taking time away from big stuff. So it makes sense to do them later.

We do want bug reports when we think we're approaching a real release, but until then it seems like a bad use of everyones energy.

DU

Boris Rorsvort Mon 12 Jan 2015 7:42AM

Well, since you're using github issues, i guess we can at least use that channel right?
Otherwise we'll have to keep track ourselves of the potential bugs and manually see if they get fixed over time.

RG

Robert Guthrie Mon 12 Jan 2015 10:32PM

I'd be ok to reconsider this if It means we get more contributions and collaborators... I was thinking in a pretty uncollaborative way I guess.

I’m a software engineer, musician, and activist. I’m interested in using Loomio in various political organisations I’m a member of, and hopefully also contributing some code.

SP

Steve Phillips / @elimisteve Tue 13 Jan 2015 3:48AM

@robertguthrie As not-community-driven as the Loomio building process has been thus far, because us programmers who use Loomio aren't submitting pull requests? Sorry!

@robertguthrie Really, REALLY important question (which I've asked other Loomio members) that I want your take on -- what do you need to complete Loomio 1.0 ASAP? Pull requests, and donations to fund code-making? Are those the main 2?

RG

Robert Guthrie Tue 13 Jan 2015 4:59AM

@elimisteve I know you're really keen to help, but I'm on holiday after working really hard up to the end of last year.

Work will really pick up in Feb, but until then I personally don't have time to answer your requests.

The roadmap is the most up to date place for progress.

We're excited to open up the development processes as much as feels productive to us. @jameskiesel is taking on the role of supporting open source contributors. It seems like 2015 is going to be a promising year for real open source contributions, and we hope to help it thrive, but you might just need to be patient because of the specific time of year.

SP

Steve Phillips / @elimisteve Tue 13 Jan 2015 7:26AM

@robertguthrie You've kicked ass and have personally added hundreds and hundreds of thousands of lines of code to Loomio, which is amazing -- please recharge and enjoy your break! :-)

I'll think of more precise questions and maybe we can tend to them later.

MB

Matthew Bartlett Wed 14 Jan 2015 7:51AM

@elimisteve Donations to help speed up the completion of Loomio 1.0 would certainly be welcome! You can do that through our crowdfunding page (which is still live), or if that doesn’t suit drop me a note (matthew.bartlett@loomio.org) and we’ll figure something out :)

RG

Robert Guthrie Wed 14 Jan 2015 7:59PM

@elimisteve just for the record, I've contributed a lot of code recently.. but the hundreds of thousands of lines are actually libraries that I copied in, then removed (which also counts as lines of work) as I was trying to solve the problem of deploying the angular system.

In fact, it was sloppy work done under time pressure. It might be possible to remove those commits from the tree to clean up the statistics.

SP

Steve Phillips / @elimisteve Wed 14 Jan 2015 8:27PM

Thanks @matthewbartlett.

@robertguthrie Fair enough.

Anyway, great work @matthewbartlett, Max Irving, @jessedoud, @simontegg, @hannahsalmon, @jonlemmon, @aaronthornton, @alanna, @robertguthrie, and others for your code and documentation contributions to Loomio in 2014!

We're both active members of a leftist political party, into which we're going to implant Loomio as out main means of communication.

We're short on the tech knowledge about back-end stuff like the actual installation of Loomio (but so far, Hannah has been kind enough and patient with my questions), so we're taking it one step at a time.

hi alll :) I'm a member of a new ngo group in Szeged / South Hungary. We have organized a conference, the first one of other similar Hungarian movements, civil organizations. Our first group was dedicated to organize this conference.
Finished it, I want to "archive" it partially: leaving there only some of the adequate topics, and want to save, archive the other ones. Then create a new group to the second conference, to continue the organizing.

I couldn't find any solution to archive topics (searching in loomio, googling etc.), so I've saved them in word (foolish method, I know :) ) - then I've deleted them, and rename our original group.

Is there any good solution to solve this?

Thanks for your kind welcoming :)

DU

Deleted account Thu 5 Mar 2015 8:27PM

Hi @andivida, apologies for the delay! Currently there is no functionality in Loomio for archiving discussions, however it has been discussed at length in the Feature Ideas subgroup, and there is a card for it in our public roadmap (which documents what's coming up in our development pipeline). Right now, we’re focused on finishing the transition to Loomio 1.0, but we’ll be digging into designing and developing functionality users want later in the year :)

Hi Alison, it sounds like it could be a browser issue - are you able to save the file, and then open it using Word?

If you have any other technical questions about Loomio, or if you experience any further problems, please feel free to send an email to contact@loomio.org, or post them in our Help subgroup :)

GC

Greg Cassel Thu 5 Mar 2015 9:22PM

I think there's a possible workaround for the current inability to archive discussions, but please correct me @hannahsalmon (or anyone) if I'm missing something. Coordinators could create a 'mirror group' (or subgroup) for 'Group X', with the same membership, and give it a name such as "Archives for Group X". They could then move any desired topics from Group X to the archives group.

This is obviously an imperfect solution, and would require some maintenance to keep the group memberships reasonably in synch. However, if and when Loomio develops an 'internal archiving' feature for groups, it would be possible in theory to move discussions back from 'Archives for Group X' to 'Group X'.

I joined this group because I am part of the Berlin group preparing the Open Source Circular Economy Days (osced2015.org) where I want to hold a workshop on open source event-planning tools for the kind of people I normally work with, that is for non-techie self-organized grass roots groups who have at times little experience in organizing their events. I want to enable them to do this more easily so they have more time to focus on their ideas to better this world together, and to help them with consensus decision making so they make better balanced decisions (this is why I love the four hand-symbols including the differentiation between disagree and veto).
I am no techie myself, but have much experience in decions making and group coordination porcesses.

I think Loomio is an amazing tool and will keep trying to contribute with it as much as I can.

In this photo I’m with the (injured) person that first told me about Loomio, Rai (Raimond García), together at the first PODEMOS Democratic BBQ, first informal meeting of the tech people (Círculo TIC) of the PODEMOS party at Madrid.

Please say a big warm welcome our newest community members!

Welcome @macroneabe!

I’m really interested in Loomio as an open-source, ethical, privacy-aware alternative for community activism and organisation.

And welcome @amelialoye!

I care about community, sustainability and representative government. I believe if we work together we can do great things. I’m a social scientist engaging community and stakeholders for Government. I also help Open and prepare Government to listen. I’ve also created a small business called engage2 so I can work with like minded people whose skills compliment mine so I can do what I do better.

Thank you both for providing us with an introduction!

Welcome to the Loomio Community @olivermintersolvol! Thank you for your introduction:

I already use Loomio for our our political party “Online Direct Democracy” (formally Senator Online) in Australia. We have just been given the go ahead from the AEC to contest the 2016 Australian Federal Election, whilst “The Australian Democrats” have been de-registered by the AEC (Australian Electoral Commission). I wish to ask someone in a loomio forum about how to use Video Conferencing Software for large groups of people. We need to find a sofware system that automatically queues people up so that EVERYONE can have a chance to talk, in a civilized & efficient manner.

This sounds like it could be a good thing to explore in the Group Coordinators Loomio group - a Loomio Community subgroup dedicated to the sharing of facilitation tips and tricks, and collaborative problem solving.

Hi Oliver - Maestro Conferencing are keen on getting involved in open gov and digital democracy. I spoke to Brian, one of the founders, about this last year. I suspect he'll be pretty open to an pro-bono or low cost trial run. Amelia

hi everyone - thankyou so much for your incredibly speedy replies and offers of support. i have written a reminder on my "to do list" to come back and talk with you about the issue i raised - however right now im swamped with work for the Online Direct Democracy party! we are very short staffed at the moment - but as each day goes by we are getting more organised... Thanks again for your replies - i promise i will be in touch over the next 14 days. Regards Oliver Minter.

OK my original question that I wanted to ask the Loomio Software Development team - was this:

There currently seems to be NO video conferencing software in the whole world that can queue people up automatically in a realtime democratic way to speak for large groups of people. Our Australian political Party - "Online Direct Democracy" formally "Senator Online" - currently uses the Google Hangout Software for Video Conferencing for our own Internal Party decision making - with groups of up to 11 people. We also (of course) use Loomio itself to make decisions. Loomio is far far easier to make decisions than Video conferencing - but occasionally we need to gather everyone in the same cyberspace at the same time to collectively solve a problem. (And it feels nice - to actually "see" and "hear" people - it fosters a sense of trust - and you can more easily understand people's personalities)

So I am wondering whether LOOMIO could create a PAID PREMIUM SERVICE for its clients that would include Video Conferencing for large groups of people. Some of the things that we as a party require this future software to do is to automatically queue people up for speaking. By this I mean for example "Anne" is currently talking and has been talking for about 3mins... Towards the end of her speech she suddenly inspires 4 others to reply to her or to raise a similar topic/idea. Currently as Google Hangout works - ALL 4 start trying to talk after Anne has finished. This leads to some microphones being muted - and general confusion - and a lot of - "oh sorry you go" etc etc... Could there be a solution to this? Could the solution be that as Anne was talking that Tom, Peter, Paul & Mary press a green button called NEXT as soon as they have an idea and want to talk? If Mary pressed the button 2 seconds before Tom - then Mary would automatically be queued up to speak next, followed by Tom etc etc. Everyone would see on the screen who is queued up next.... You could even have a time limit warning on each speaker - a clock countdown or polite reminder that you maybe "hogging" the meeting.

It would also be good if you could have a “like” button or a "thumbs up" or "thumbs down" button - to use WHILST people are speaking….which would give realtime feedback to the speaker without 15 people trying to all say at once “yes - i agree with you”...

So does anyone think this could be possible?

Kind regards,
Oliver Minter

Welcome to the Loomio Community group @barnabyflynn! Thank you so much for providing such a detailed introduction:

Hello

I am investigating ways we can find our common humanity in the face of global threats. And I am a total nature nut.

I have a few questions regarding Loomio to see if it will be the best tool to use for our Global People Power project and to explore potential collaboration between us.

Global People Power is still in development and yet to be officially launched but the concept has recently become live. It is a globally participative democratic process focussing on creating just fifteen global policies to solve humanities’ most urgent global problems; problems such as climate change, war, inequality and the power that multi-national corporations wield over national governments. In order to avoid a first mover competitive disadvantage, the “Big 15” will be implemented by nations around the world in a synchronised and cooperative way. Global People Power is also a campaign and voting strategy to drive governments to cooperate.

Included in the democratic processes will be thinking tools in the form of emoticons to facilitate collaborative debate, systemic thinking and value awareness and honouring.

I have been attending Occupy and Occupy Democracy as I believe that the online process must be complimented by regular monthly, globally networked street demonstrations of our evolving democracy.

Can you please advise me? What I am looking for is a process that integrates Liquid Democracy and an intelligent participatory process like your own which we can use to create the Big 15? It will need to be open source so that it can be adapted to integrate the thinking tool icons within debate text, limit the number of proposals people can make (if necessary) and amend the timings of proposal-to-debate-to-voting of policy. Does the operating system you are building support these demands? How can we mutually support each other’s campaigns?

@benjaminknight! So good to hear from you as well!

Here's a quick introduction. I love this project and all Enspiral is up to. I think, completely honestly, that Loomio is have one of the world's most important free software projects. Plus, I'm beyond excited about the future of Cobudget. Both are so needed in so many ways.

To the point where I'm actually investing as much time in my life as possible at learning Ruby. I'm sick of not being able to contribute whole-heartedly to projects, and I'm going to learn so I can. (Any advice on that, reach out, @cndiv on Twitter.)

A little about me. I'm from the USA, I'm from St. Louis, Missouri, and I currently live in Oakland and work in San Francisco. I worked for the Wikimedia Foundation for 4.5 years, where I met @alanna and @benjaminknight as I argued for, and we started using Loomio internally.

I'm going to dig down and find out how Loomio is organized, but if it's acceptable for me to be around (silently, as I can't help yet) on how the project moves forward, I'd love to just listen and watch a team in action.

Thanks all!

BK

HL

Hamish Low Thu 20 Aug 2015 12:24AM

¡Kia ora tatou, hola de tod@s!

I'm Hamish, currently in Colombia and soon to start work with an amazing organisation Peace Brigades International (PBI) as a Field Volunteer for the next 18 months. I've been enamoured of this organisation for some time - PBI uses consensus in every level of decisionmaking (and has done so for 31 years, here lies the parallel with Loomio) - though as I haven't started yet it's important to mention that I'm not here in any official organisational capacity, I'm not certain how involved in these discussions I'll be able to be once I start due to the intensity of the work but hopefully I might be able to contribute in a useful capacity, but also I hope to promote the use of Loomio within PBI. It's a perfect match and could be really useful for the organisation.

This recent documentary is a great introduction to the work of PBI in Latin America... http://pbicolombia.org/2015/07/27/land-of-corn/

PBI also currently has projects in Kenya, Nepal and Indonesia...you might especially be interested in the Nepal project which following the resolution of the conflict in Nepal has focused on capacity-building for local NGOs which has involved the development of an online tool Nepal Monitor: https://www.nepalmonitor.org/

As for myself, I've recently left London where I've been working with the homelessness charity St Mungo's Broadway http://www.mungosbroadway.org.uk/ for the last 5 years. My academic background is in Peace and Conflict Studies, Fine Arts, Humanities... I've also been a volunteer mediator and restorative justice practicioner with Lambeth Mediation Service http://lambethmediation.org.uk/ the last few years, and I'm really interested in how Loomio can be
used as a tool to help individuals, groups and organisations develop improved understanding of conflict and to propagate these skills.

If there were no more work to do around conflict, human rights or social justice I would want to spend my time on purely creative projects of no discernable use to anyone. Art is about finding what we can share and a modest record of my journey so far is online here - http://hamishlow.net ... (in English and in Spanish....)

arohanui,

Hamish

Welcome @wikihouseharry! Thanks so much for providing us with such an awesome introduction!

Hey Loomio community, I am from New Zealand where I lived in Christchurch for all my life. I studied JAAAZZZZZZ. I then lived through the earthquakes and started playing less jazz and instead contributing on fun projects like FESTA (Festival of Transitional Architecture), Gap Filler stuff (who didn't i guess!?), Exchange Christchurch (event and rentable maker/workspace), Neat Places (new post quake businesses or old ones reopening). I also started some of my own projects usually in the event space. I'm passionate believer in creativity and collaboration (yes those two buzz words the mean something different to everyone), im also passionate about good mental and emotional health which I think is HUGELY vital in community and work involving collaboration or just other people. Recently I moved to London where I landed at WikiHouse Foundation as their community host/guy/moderator/whatever you like. Since then everything I have done has been thrown into thinking around larger scale social movements and human behaviour, big fan of engagement (at one point I thought I was going to be a social media marketer HA), also big fan of openness and for anyone to have the ability to work with everyone on anything. I am currently introducing WikiHouse to Loomio with the hope that it may be the perfect tool for our growing community of members and 'chapters'. I also hope we can be a part of the Loomio community throughout this process as we all learn and share how to do things... well... better!

Hi Josir! It's a neighbor from Rio (Copacabana) here! Maybe we know each other if you participated some day in OcupaRio, OcupaCâmara and/or numerous popular assemblies and rallies around our city since 2011. Anyway, if you're interested in direct democracy we, at least, have friends in common. Glad to see one more carioca in Loomio (our people must learn how to use this amazing tool instead of keep trying organize protests and decide important issues via facebook). Looking forward to properly dig into your website as soon as possible (as an independent activist the making of a political party in Brazil doesn't seems to be a good idea, even with all your good projects; but as a carioca its understandable to see people who wants to participate in politics avoiding so many anachronistic parties; anyway congrats for the initiative). If you want you can also see my portfolio as an author at arenato.com. See you!

JCG

Josir Cardoso Gomes Tue 26 Jan 2016 12:20PM

Hi Renato. I know your work! Your ebook is on my "virtual desk" to be read :)

Probably we've already met on those rallies and had shared the same gas bombs smoke :))

We are half movement/half political party and we want to aggregate those who don't want/believe on politic parties but has common beliefs mainly on the ecological and direct democracy matters. People can participate and vote and don't need to be "filiated".

We are great experiment on Direct Democracy. All our decision-making are made on Loomio!

This thursday we will meet on the Journalists Syndicate here in Rio. Be welcome to meet us and know our project.

Health and freedom!

AR

A. Renato Tue 26 Jan 2016 12:48PM

Nice to know it all, Josir! Still reading the texts on Raiz and so far it's very interesting! Take a look at the system which some independent activists and others were/are trying to make in Rio's streets and plazas: AutoGov and some of its resources at OpenSource. Believe it or not, all what you'll see, including the spreadsheets and the legal procedures as OSCIP (the web portal isn't ready to be launched yet), still doesn't make much sense while it's only me working on it (our fellow Cariocas appears to be lost when we talk about online popular organization outside facebook -- can't wait for it to be changed). So, feel free to do what you want with the material (your party must jump on it; some already are).

Even though the tear gas in Rio are now mostly expired :P after 5 years it was time to come back home :) in order to keep independence from the politicians trying to surround me (and our people stop to centralize around/ be independent from me).

Anyway, as it's an area specific for introductions, please take note of my e-mail address: info@arenato.com

Also please tell me (via e-mail) the time of your meeting next Thursday; maybe will be there to personally know its members and certainly wait for nice conversations, specially about the 'progressive consensus as it is (very well) described in the 7 pages 'guide'; affiliate never -- it's Brazil, bro, and my focus is on a city (any city) level connected to the world.

And as you expressed interest, you'll receive an invitation to collaborate in the ongoing process of Loomios' translation to Portuguese-BR (you have to get a free account in Transifex; and you can already join the Loomio Translation Community); improvements are very welcome.

Hugs!

I'm a software developer interested in collaborative decision-making software like Loomio and DemocracyOS

Welcome @jordankamin!

Hi! I'm Jordan and I'm a teacher and rails developer. I've been teaching at Dev Bootcamp San Francisco for the last year or so. I heard about Loomio from a group of students who contributed to Loomio as their final project, which was really cool! I'd love to contribute some features and work with the community to help improve loomio.

@jameskiesel, maybe you and Jordan should have a chat sometime soon (if you haven't already).

Thank you both for providing us with introductions! Please make yourselves at home

Thanks @hannahsalmon, I'd like to expand a bit on my terse introduction which I didn't realize was going to be posted here

I hail from Switzerland and make my living as a software developer and sysadmin, but I've also long had an interest in collaborative decision-making, fueled initially by youthful daydreams about anarchism, then by my experiences working at a Swiss open participation startup, and lately more by things like Agile project management and forms of peer governance. My current job is with a developer agency and we've been trying out Agile methods for doing collaborative company development (similar in concept as Loomio's Away Days), which got me back to kicking around an old idea I've had for something very much like Loomio. After some research I quickly discovered this active community, and now I'm glad I can just contribute here instead of starting my own project that won't go anywhere

Something else I was wondering, our company recently joined forces with Impact Hub and we founded a new co-working space in Zurich together, and they seem to have very similar goals as the Enspiral Network (spreading collaboration and social entrepreneurship). I'm sure you're aware of their spaces, but have you ever talked with them about working together more closely on other projects? If you're interested I'd be glad to ask around for a good contact person.

MK

Markus Koller Tue 16 Feb 2016 6:54PM

@renato actually I recently learned that after the First International in Paris, the anarchist groups met up in a small Swiss village for the First Anarchist International ;-)

AR

A. Renato Sun 6 Mar 2016 3:21PM

A Swiss friend searched for two weeks and didn’t find a documentary on the First International Anarchist : ( Then she was invited to this conversation, but she said that has nothing to collaborate and her family business is already consensual : D So, my explanation is that the reason why her country is already under Direct Democracy is because its people live freedom in the present rather than talk about its pass. Too simplistic explanation, but her country mixed economy (participatory and with strong governmental regulations) is so far advanced in comparison with the rest of the world that it’s hard to accept that other countries can’t do the same. Instead, there is a widespread misconception that Swiss is some sort of free market economic capitalist paradise lol for those who don’t read even a WikiPedia page.

MK

Markus Koller Sun 6 Mar 2016 6:03PM

@renato there's also this widespread misconception (especially among the Swiss themselves) that Switzerland has "achieved" direct democracy, but our system is still very much a representative one at its core ;-)

AR

A. Renato Mon 7 Mar 2016 1:00AM

You’re right! According to WikiPedia itself, the Swiss confederation is a semi-direct democracy (representative democracy with strong instruments of direct democracy). Not there yet ; )

Thanks @hannahsalmon! At first i was looking for more details on the price plans, but i was told on Twitter that a new Price Plan page is coming.

Now I'm trying to work out how i can make my subgroups open to all members (but only members), and threads private. It seems like i can only have private threads in subgroups members must request to join, or public threads in open subgroups. What am i missing? :)

Thanks for the warm welcome, really looking forward to learning more!

Hi Simon. Unfortunately you can't make a subgroup immediately accessible to parent group members (i.e. open to join). However, you can share the subgroup's shareable invitation link (accessible from the Invite People form) in the parent group and encourage people to use it. Clicking the link will give them immediate access to the subgroup.

Hi there, and thanks @natilombardo

I'm the Developer Advocate and Community Manager at SilverStripe. I'm interested in communities as stores of tacit knowledge and informal community relationships with other organisations (be them commercial or public sector) and how the interaction at the boundaries of those spaces play out practically. I'm also a big Free & Open Source Software (FOSS) geek and spoke on the Open Government panel last year at the Open Source Open Society conference.

I started playing with Loomio a long time ago when it was an internal beta at Ensprial and have followed it's progress ever since.

We used Loomio to decide if we might adopt Loomio with the SilverStripe community about 18 months ago. We didn't adopt due to a few features we needed, however seems these have now been added. I may well revisit this.

I'm also currently on 3 months secondment to the New Zealand Open Data Programme, and presently using Loomio to run a participative public consultation on what will be the first public policy on FOSS licensing and release. You can check this out at https://www.loomio.org/g/NohQxyr9/nzgoal-software-extension-discussion-of-draft

Thanks for the kind welcome

Greeting @natilombardo and community!

Regardless of the size and scope of an entity, discussions and decisions are an integral party of any organization. I represent a non-profit seeking to minimize face-to-face meetings and have stumbled upon Loomio while in search of an online, easy to use tool focused on group-based decision making. Cheers to all those involved in creating just such a tool!

PF

Paul Free Mon 6 Jun 2016 1:49AM

ups, I've tryed to introduce myself but somehow just made a poposal. Luckily loomio was storing it so I just need to press the publish button instead of rewriting.

Hello @natilombardo (we've met during the d-cent)
happy to be on board and thy for welcoming! :-)

I'm Paul and working at the moment on several projects, all connected to the idea of gifteconomy and collaboration.
My main focus at this very moment is on yunity.org
Yunity for the first release will be an opensorce online plattform all mainly all about uncodicional sharing. Beside the online work yunity is aswell an offline comunity which cames out of the movement of foodsharing, which has sofar 100.000 members.
With yunity we want to provide out network foodsharing with a new plattform to turn this movment international.

I'm highly interested in creating social architecture which creates a culture to allow effectively colaboration in agile selforganized networks. To open up the silos a lot of organisation are caged with the intetion of lifting each others ideas. In here I'm interested in online same as offline networks.
One of my intention is to connect with all the different projects working on same ideas. One outcome of my dream would be an opensource tool which provides agile network with any kind of tool is needed/helpfull to manage projects without the need of fixed structure but selforganized.
And in loomio I see as one of those groups working on tools helping people beeing selforganized. I would love to connect more to you guys and may aswell give you an inside about an desicion making system we're using.
It's called systemic consensus which when it comes to the voting process about giving feedback about the resistance.

I'm interested in developing decicion making process giving feedback about the main intention of a group, but still not overrunning single opinions/people.
If you have any papers about desicion making and the philosophy and so on that would be great fo me to read.

Aswell I would be interested in to meet you in person. I'm fulltime volunteer jumping around in eruope and living since 2014 free of money. If there's any interest in why and how I'm glad to chat.

Yeah I guess that's for the first enough textwall. Thx for reading until the end . Looking forward to get more in conntact with the loomio community.

My name is Lucas Tauil de Freitas, I’m a Brazilian living in Titirangi, westy Auckland, New Zealand.

A relationship builder and community weaver, I am truly interested in people and their stories.

By honoring people’s narratives and offering reciprocity, exposing my views and intentions, I‘ve learned that trust is the foundation of relationships and organizations.

This led me to gather a group of people I admire and trust on a collective we named Guilda. Spread around five continents, we are working on a circle of trust relationship visualization model with curation tools.

The prototype was named Entrust.
The purpose is to reduce the noise on communications within circles of trust. AS a first move we intend to help members of a community to reduce the amount of comms they get.

The idea is give people tools to sort their inflow of knowledge and content by choosing curators and topics they are interested in.

We want to allow people to manage what they watch and match it to their time availability.

We see this as a useful tool within a community and also for connecting likeminded communities.

Fifteen years ago overwhelmed by a wrong cancer diagnosis I left the newsrooms where I worked as a reporter and columnist to chase my dreams of being close to my family and sailing. This is how we got to New Zealand.

All this time exposed to nature and its season’s gave me intimacy to the elements, which became good insights on how the elements are strong metaphors for people’s temperaments.

I am also interested in how traditional communities’ dynamics and governance models can help healing our social fabric.

I'm also involved in the local grocery cooperative (Bloomingfoods), a municipal level task force on innovating around civic engagement (I'm a co-chair), and several food and sustainability based non-profit organizations. I'm interested in the potential Loomio has as an organizing tool that can help all of these organizations. I'm a language agnostic developer with over 6 years of experience in the industry -- my last position was as a senior developer at Ceros, writing front end javascript for a browser based design studio. I'm potentially interested in contributing to Loomio's development and helping to design some features I'd like to see in Loomio that I think would greatly expand its usefulness as a development tool!

Hello!
I'm brazilian, but living in France since 2002. Sorry about my poor English, I hope it's understandable.
In France, I direct a little documentary film festival (www.fide.lesimpatientes.org) with a volunteer staff. I'm the "geeker" of the group, always finding new tools to communicate and work together (like Asana.com) and scaring the others!
I think Loomio will be one of my favourite tools soon!

But I came here because, with a group of brazilian women, we are creating a project about woman presence in media. In only one day we were 104 in many parts of the world so we really needed to find a tool to communicate and don't loose information.

I also organize free courses to explain to volunteers how to use some tools to collaborate and Loomio will certainly be in the next ones.

If I can help with anything to help to develop or spread, just let me know. :-)

Open Government is a movement that is becoming a small industry. It is made up of folks who are working to move the decision making system from command and control (which is what our so called democratic system abides by) to shared dialogue and collaborative design .. There are many nuances to this; truly and emerging skill and art form to bring people together beyond 3 minute presentations in front of a local city council, all of whom have mostly decided their position on a topic and can't wait just to get through the (so called) whining and bitching of citizens coming to the podium to speak. The method we default to continues to shock me, and yet most have no idea there is another better way; one that is more inherent to our human(e)ness. Have I started to answer your question? I'm Brazilian, 33 years old, married to Juliana and my life story is a little exotic. When I turned 18, instead of going to college, I decided to live in a Buddhist temple (chagdud.org). Where I was able to learn meditation and traditional Tibetan painting and sculpture. After 4 wonderful years living there, I felt like it was time to go back to school. In 2014, i graduated in architecture and urbanism at USP, Brazil's most prestigious University. Shortly after graduating, I left my job and went in a 6 months meditation retreat, after that I was unable to relate to the architect work and to the profit driven economical model that we live. After a lot of studying and research, I was luck enough to read about en.spiral and many other people who are really "turning work into a offering" towards a better future. Last week, I read about the Edmund Hillary Fellowship, do you guys recommend the program?

I have come across Loomio through Enspiral and took part in the Open Enspiral workshop in Amsterdam in October ’16.

I currently live in the Netherlands where I give trainings in lean office concepts, meaning how to be personally and collectively productive with the least amount of waste and the maximum value for customers. Example: I teach teams how to setup and use Inbox Zero in their email.

I am also part of Structure & Process, an organisational development company. Our core activities are consulting on Holacracy and Teal and organising gatherings for our expanding, mostly Central European, community of colleagues/clients.

Hey everyone,

I’m very excited to be apart of this amazing group. I’m from Belize. Have any of you guys heard of it? I’m looking to implement this in my country as a political tool for change. The corruption is too high and the people don’t have a say in the decision making in the country. Right now I am testing the software as vigorously as possible and I have to see where changes can be made before going life. I am 24 years old, aspiring user experience engineer, and in love with open source and linux.

@edmundciego Hi. I've been to Belize! What a gorgeous country. I've just been chatting with a colleague in Quito who is also struggling with opportunities to use Loomio as tool for change.

Let me know if I can offer any support. I'm one of Loomio's team members based in the U.S.

Cheers,
MJ

Magdalena Valderrama Hurwitz Thu 18 May 2017 5:35PM

Hello everyone, Magdalena here in Northern California 2+ hrs NNE of San Francisco. I bring a history that includes training in corporate culture change, consensus-building and strategic meeting facilitation. I live in one of many neighborhoods struggling to rebuild after the 2015 Valley Fire that has been acknowledged as the State's third most damaging wildfire in history.

Twenty of us (and we're working on bringing in another 20) have decided to rebuild as a village. With the help of the Sustainable Economies Law Center in Oakland we found lawyers and accountants who specialize in cooperative ventures. We've organized enough to be able to file our Limited Liability Company papers so that we can receive and disburse.funds to pay for the development process, and we have been working with one of the best land tenure consultants in the Bay Area to help us figure out how to keep the land permanently out of the speculative market. We're going through the process of establishing our core values. The whole process has been moving along as a constant juggle between the chicken and the egg ("which comes first?").

We know this neighborhood can't recover well without the rest of the area as well. I worked with fellow activists to establish a municipal advisory council last year so we could have a voice in how the county is working with the recovery process where we are, at the epicenter of the area affected by the wildfire. There's a long row ahead to hoe, but we figure now's the opportunity to create a fire-safe, water-wise, aging-in-place community infrastructure in collaborative relationship with our neighbors and our county.

As for myself, back to a more personal note, my parents were both diplomats, and I like to think I absorbed a lot of how inclusive they were of all the people we.met. Ive been a student of the World Friend, Adi Da Samraj, author of "'Not-Two' IS Peace" , published by the Dawn Horse Press, for a few decades. I have used Sococo,Trello and Open Space Technology with Google Sheets (to create a real-time agenda board) to plan, organize and implement a live conference for 13 people coming in from 3 different countries and 6 states in the USA.

I just met Nati and Richard, and I'm excited about meeting you all and learning about the new possibilities with Loomio.

Eliot Hurwitz Fri 19 May 2017 6:18PM

Hi,
This is Eliot - just joined Loomio to help with two projects: Development of a new cooperative community, called Bright Village (bright-village.org), from the ashes of catastrophic wildfires here in Northern California last year. We hope to build homes for 40 people on 6 acres and are following a collaborative development process similar to the process used in Cohousing projects. Most of the members of the Bright Village are also active participants in the spiritual culture established by Adi Da Samraj (www.adidam.org) and provide support to the Mountain Of Attention meditation and retreat sanctuary across the road from the Village site. Our committment to using a collaborative development process is challenged by having members in diferent time zones, by needing to clearly codify core spiritual values in a usable way and by the complexity of the development process altogether.

The second project is related, but involves the broader community affected by the 2015 fire. As part of the overall recovery process we have established a new "Cobb Area Council" (cobbareacouncil.org) to bring together the very diverse neighbors affected by the fire. We have been advised that the damage to our community is comparable to that sustained by New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina and that it will take many years for the new reality of our area to stabilize and its character become clear. The Cobb Area Council is a key community forum whereby this transformation will occur and we hope that using Loomio will help us engage the broadest range of community members in the redevelopment process.

My personal background is 10 years in Washington DC with the US govt (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Adminstration) doing sustainable development policy during the Clinton/Gore years, 3 years work on sustainable development strategies for the San Francisco Bay area and 10 years working on strategic planning at the County level in N. California. And 35 years as an active member of the Adidam spiritual community focusing on incarnating our sacred cooperative culture. Degree in anthropology from Harvard, interested in the core dynamics of collaboration, especially the spiritual implications and roots of our deep presumptions of being separate individuals at all!

Hi this is Midi speaking as start-up Steward of the Gene Keys Society

http://society.genekeys.com.

The Gene Keys is a body of wisdom born in the third millennium that integrates ancient spiritual teachings with the new science of quantum physics, molecular biology and genetics - think I Ching meets DNA! - It provides people with a contemplative path to self illumination, community creation and philanthropic service.

We've been using Loomio for some time, first to provide a forum for the design and development of our website, which launched in mid-March. Then also (once the Society was legally registered) to be the place where our globally-based teams can meet and communicate and make decisions online.
Some of our more extraverted members struggle with Loomio. Writing in English which is our lingua franca is also a challenge for some English as second language members. Most love it and teams are becoming ever more comfortable in its use. We combine online dialogue and decisions with zoom online meetings.
We are excited by the introduction of the new decision making tools. We are just beginning to use them and thank Loomio hugely for them!
love to all

Oh wonderful that you appreciate the new tools. How do you find the new threaded comment feature (now it's working correctly)? Thanks for your patience with the introduction and bug squashing.

We're also considering a feature which would allow people to record a voice or video message, would that help your extraverted members?

Not keen still on threaded comment feature personally, but it is working better - thanks! Yes video could be much appreciated, Robert. I'll check with the group.

Hi,

I've been looking for a good open-source project to volunteer some code to. I don't know much about ruby, but Loomio seems like the best collaborative governance software out there.

I'd like to see a project like this utilizing a blockchain (ethereum?). It only makes sense that collaborative decisions don't get stored on a centralized server.

That's about all; see you on GitHub!

Hi! I'm keen to see how I can help out with Loomio. A group I'm working with are planning on using it for decision making and I'm keen to see how I can possibly help improve the platform (for everyone and for them!). Are there some 'simple tasks' that are sitting around to get familiar with the code base, or any outstanding tasks at all that I could try to tackle to get a lay of the land?

RG

Robert Guthrie Wed 22 Nov 2017 10:14PM

Hi Ben, nice to have you in here. We develop the codebase on Github and that's where we keep track of issues and tasks. Have a look through there and see if there is anything that fits your skillset.

Do you speak a language other than Engish? We're always looking for translation support. Also we're keen to find people who want to work on the help documents, if you like explaining technology and function in a friendly but concise manner.

FABRICE ALCINDOR Tue 30 Jan 2018 9:18PM

Hi, My name is Fabrice. I live in south-est of france and I animate a mountain bike association(ascvtt). We decided to move this year to Loomio to replace our mailing-list. Why? Because integrated collaboration tools are great, as well as mail notification and answering system. I'll be glad to contribute to enhance the tools by our feedback, and why not code contribution.

Hugi Ásgeirsson Fri 2 Feb 2018 11:58AM

Hey, I'm Hugi. I've recently set up a custom Loomio install for our participatory event (and regional Nordic burn) The Borderland which we call Borderland Talk. I've been really impressed with how the Loomio team has answered issues on GitHub and have had fixes ready in a matter of days. Big up!

We're actually running our own branch of Loomio, and our own Loomio-deploy docker image, since we are planning to adapt some of the vocabulary and the proposal mechanisms to our circumstances. But it won't diverge too far, and most changes will be cosmetic, so I'll keep updating my merging new versions of the stable branch.

Hi I'm Caron @pcmcreative most places online :)

I'm EquityUK's Online Branch community moderator and committee chair.

All our democratic decisions are collectively made online. Our current digital home's coding is not compatible with the organisation new website so I am exploring the wilds of cyberspace in search of suitable solutions which engage members while conforming to the Rules and Standing Orders we are bound by. Loomio looks like a good decision making solution as a stand in for our Debating Chamber.

Zukero Tue 11 Jun 2019 8:33AM

Hello Loomio

Among other things, I am currently the lead developer of Andor's Trail, a free software RPG for Android.
The game is developed by a small international team of volunteers doing this on our spare time, with no money involved (no donations or patreon), only love and passion.

We have a public forum, and used a private part of it & email for our team's communications. This quickly proved insufficient (have you tried walking a beginner through git by email when he doesn't even use the same OS as you?) , and after oh so many tests, we started using Slack. It was a revolution for us, and collaboration improved greatly.

Now, what slack lacks IMHO is a way to gather and organize opinions to make decisions. We are only a handful of people, yet it can be hard to reach a consensus. We're scattered around the globe, with busy lifes, so voice or video meetings aren't a viable option.

Enters loomio! I stumbled upon this by chance (reading the Wikipedia page about diaspora* IIRC), and found the open-source open-democracy philosophy really matched our own.
So we've been testing Loomio for about a week now, and one of the opened decisions to make is "Should we use loomio or stick to Slack?". Looking good so far and the Slack integration is a big plus for us.

I'll give more detailed feedback and ideas in a more suitable thread though.

Thank you for Loomio and for reading this!

Hi, I am Pierre-Marie from Paris, France.
I am recently involved with Extinction Rebellion (XR) and some other organisations.
Work with and as a community to change the world is quite a challenge.
I just discovered Loomio. I am delighted and it looks like "The tool" to work on projects with groups and communities to discuss, decide, take actions and move on. Great !
