We are posting a series of Loomio discussions about sessions and talks coming up at the conference, so participants can have a chance to discuss the topics, ask questions, and interact with the presenters.

Breakout Session: Should it be Closed? Should it be Open?

Don and Brandon will explore when and how companies, organisations and projects should be closed or open source. They will look at both the positive and negatives as well as the opportunities and the costs.

Don Christie is one of the founders and a director of NZ's largest open source company, Catalyst, which has offices in three countries and two hemispheres. He is a Past President of the NZ Open Source Society and currently co-chair of the NZ digital association, NZRise. Don has been active in the free and open source community for many years and with many others has successfully advocated for copyright law reform, patent law reform and sensible free trade agreements.

GitHub has changed the way open source is built, and Brandon is changing the way GitHub builds open source. An engineer by trade, he believes open source is a fundamental to building great products, and great products sustain healthy open source projects. He shares his endeavours on twitter as @bkeepers and on his blog at opensoul.org.
