Can our software be open source.

J Joum Public Seen by 16

Hi, We have not yet started to develop any software. Some previous SOL workers did produce a mock and one of our members start his own voting website.

There is nothing out there yet, that we know of, that matches our needs. I have pasted my dream idea below.

BUT, we could look at a fundamental question here.

CAN OUR SOFTWARE SAFELY BE OPEN SOURCE? AND IF IT CAN THEN SHOULD IT?

Now for the DigitalDirectDemocraticMedia (3DM) dream of LB. Joum:
It will start with registering your profile / account. You will begin as a member of the top level group called “World”.

The World will have groups called “countries” Starting to get the picture? The groups within the country called “Australia” will have 3 sub-groups called “Federal”, “State” and “Local”.

Federal will have two subgroups called Senate and House of Reps. The Senate will have 8 sub groups. 6 States with 12 Senators, and the Northern Territory (NT) and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) with 2 Senators each. Hence, the last sub-group is called the senator.

Each final group (Senator, Councillor or whatever) is a vacant position. This is where the digital world stops and a person must take the position. This position is called a Politician or perhaps ipolly.

In the 'normal' political system this person will be a candidate in every election; but ipollies will be more and less than that. As a candidate and/or elected polly, they will not be able to develop policy or will they be forced to follow a party line. They must make a pledge to obey the choice of #1. their electorate, and #2. their country... if their electorate has not expressed its wishes.

The ipolly will also be responsible for the verification of all its members on the 3DM. They will use a method, like the postal system, to verify that the account holder is a real world, AEC registered, person. The account will also be checked for duplication in the 3DM system. I think that everyone should be allowed to vote in 3DM, but there will be two tallies. One with all people and one with only verified AEC registered people.

There is much more, and many questions. Like how will an ipolly get to inhabit the role. But I know they will be solved eventually.

And I think it can be safe as Open Source, Loomio is, isn't it?

And if it can then, Yes, it should be.

Just getting your attention. Lommio's inbox is full of it. They are working on a fix.

Being new to the group and forum format, I think it would be good to have your 3DM blurb mapped out on a flow chart.
A visual perspective is another way f communicating this with members.

Forgive me. I'm still learning.

Thanks @elysiumenergy.

I have done a few entity relationship diagrams, but nothing great.

But the main question in this thread is a basic one. Should it be open source? My reasoning for yes is:
1. I like Open Source
2. I think that open software is safer because geeks love to find flaws, which they will do even if it is not open. But when it is open I think they tend to help fix them. But this is my thoughts and not documented fact.

Perhaps I should put my first post in another discussion?

But it is such a big topic, I am afraid to go there, but eventually we must.

Agreed with it being open source. A sense of transparency.

I agree with the open source idea. François
