Australasian Ruleset

N NickDW [CBR] Public Seen by 31

Should we continue to have our own ruleset? Or should we adopt the NAH ruleset as our own in the interest of global consistency?

Pretty happy to let those who know more figure this out. Although any decision should be made with a global ruleset in mind as the eventual outcome.

Use the NAH rules for now, after worlds we should begin amending them as necessary to make them a) more comprehensive and b) easier to understand.

I don't mind really

If we're serious about playing with the big boys, then we have to follow their rules. The discussion around collaborative universal international rules seems like wishful thinking to me.

Three things:
1. We should keep an AHBPA ruleset
2. I'd like to see a comparison of the two rulesets first.
3. I'd like us to have agreement from NAH and EHBP that they want a World ruleset - with agreement they include us in creating it.

The reason why I'm blocking is so we can discuss it more before jumping into a decision that isn't researched and to simply raise the proposal again after we're all more informed.

The above points of difference that Ollie said are all good things to adopt. The big one which isn't mentioned here and is the most contentious is the allowing of off-ball contact. We currently don't allow off ball checks. This ruleset allows physical checking.

[general clarification] a vote can be seen as a 'current position' on a subject which could be updated at anyime. By setting it we give a timeline for the discussion

Further on each:
1. We may wish to introduce our own rules variations in future and take polo in a different direction to the rest of the world (e.g. infinite goals). We may then campaign for those rules to become part of the global ruleset but at least we don't have to wait for the world to agree.

  1. We're only just starting to get everyone aware of the existing rules, and I think we're doing a good job of it. If we're going to introduce a full set of new rules we should at least be able to tell our clubs what will be changing before we make the change. This is also important from a democratic standpoint. How are our club members supposed to endorse their rep's position if they don't know what the changes are? While they could each do the comparison themselves that takes time not everyone has. Part of this role needs to be informing our clubs so that they (and we) can make informed decisions.
  2. If we're going to be bound by a set of rules, I want a say in their creation. It's not good enough to hope the world includes us, I want their governing bodies to agree to include us before we say yes to using their rules. We can do that while we trial the NAH rules and update our own.

I would suggest changing the proposal to read:
AHBPA to trial the use of the NAH ruleset until next season while a review and update of the AHBPA rules is conducted.

My proposal was more accepting what we are actually acting on now: six teams heading to the Worlds playing with the NAH ruleset. No Sleep was also run with the NAH rules.

Then this debate could be extended into next year and our council can debate with the Europeans and Americans on an even footing about rule changes and how we want to see OUR world champs officiated.

In no way am I saying let's ditch our ruleset, more just accept the practical reality that we are currently using the NAH one.

And once this season is over then debate what worked and didn't work for our region. I don't strictly agree with a lot of the NAH rules, but we will have to work within them at Montpelier so there seems little point in debating their change now.

I think we should take the opportunity us hosting worlds has offered and make advancements in the game that the Americans oppose, like off ball checking as Brook said. Drag this sport away from the "ice hockey on bikes" model.
