Loomio

Make it easier to join sub-groups

Anyone in the Enspiral group will be familiar with the 'Loomio overload' some users are experiencing over there as the group's size and number of proposals increases.

I had a conversation with JV today about easy wins we could build to alleviate some of that fatigue: aside from features already in development, top of his list was the option to have a 'Join' button on sub-groups (currently members have to be invited, or request an invite).

The effect would be to reduce the 'cost' of starting new sub-groups, making it easier for people to customise what sort of proposals they want to have a say on.

This works really well in the Enspiral Yammer group, which has dozens of groups, arranged by topic, allowing anyone to opt in or out of topics they're interested in.

Has anyone given this any thought? Is there any reason why this wouldn't be an easy win?

Yes, please. Also, an auto-accept feature for joining public subgroups would save me a lot of trouble with having to approve everyone that gets invited.

Anyone got any suggestions for what options to put on the settings page?

e.g.

Who can invite members to this sub-group?

  • All group members
  • Admins only
  • Allow any group member to join without an invite

Jon Lemmon

Yep, looks like we've actually already got a Trello card for this on our What we're working on board.

Vote it up if it's a feature you want soon! That includes you Sean. =)

But yeah, agreed, I think this is important and would be nice to get in there soon.

In terms of actual options, maybe we should keep it separate from the "Who can invite members..." section. Just make it a separate checkbox instead. The reason why I'm thinking this is because if we ever make subgroups joinable to parent-group non-members, then we'll need two separate options (e.g. anyone inside the org can join this group, but anyone outside the org needs to be invited by an admin).

Thoughts?

Would this be a good point to bring up the issue of having to join a parent group to be able to join a sub group? Orrr is that better in a feature of it's own?

Jon Lemmon

My feeling is it's probably better as a feature discussion of its own (otherwise I think these discussions can get quite hard to follow).

Benjamin Knight

Definitely an important one @Paul!

The title of this discussion is "Make it easier to join sub-groups" and for the Community Taranaki group it's currently a bit of a road block so I had to atleast mention it.

If we're working on an autoaccept option for groups it might make sense to have it available for top level groups as well? Would be good for the Feedback group and maybe even the Loomio Community group in general, and a step towards having really open accessible groups.

I completely agree with this idea to make it easier t join sub-groups. I'm pretty certain this is leading to a lot less participation in decision making. People accept the original invite to join loomio and then discover they can't actually participate, because the decision at hand is part of a sub-group to which they don't yet belong, nor can they just join.

I started a similar discussion here:
