Collecting food waste to compost at allotment

K Katy Public Seen by 62

Hi guys

I was wondering whether people would support the idea of promoting the food co-op as a drop off point for food waste which could then be taken to the allotment to be composted.

This would hopefully promote the idea of composting rather than sending food scraps to landfill and be beneficial for the allotment in terms of compost.

We could collect the food waste, maybe on a Friday afternoon, using the bike trailer and bike it up to the allotment. We would need volunteers for this (I'd be happy to volunteer if I can).

I think Luke has some containers that we could possibly use to store the food waste in at the co-op before taking it up to the allotment. If there was more than could fit in the containers, perhaps we could think about using something like biodegradable bin bags which we could wash and reuse?

Any thoughts on whether it's a good idea and logistics?

Thanks for reading :)

Logistically it raises a few questions but I don't think it should be a problem. I suggested a compost for the sweepings and spillages (see other discussion) because ultimately the stuff at the coop is dry and there's not much of it. Stuff that people take from outside to the compost point will go anaerobic. In a warm place it could attract flies so you just need to be more careful. It could be that if it's not big enough people overfill and so on. I don't think that's a real issue, though. I think space is more the issue. Compost piles get big quickly so it needs to be emptied regularly. Placing a "compost point" bin probably needs to go where those other bins are near the cash machine or under the timetable? I don't know about biodegradable bin bags - I thought you couldn't reuse them cos they start to degrade pretty soon? Anyway I should say I'm TOTALLY for it - just thought those issues should be raised. Plus there's a compost point at the sustainable garden. Maybe team up with them? Anyway, I'd also be happy to bike it to the allotment too. My shift is thursday 4-6pm. Most power to you Katy thanks for the thread:)
