Increase vote statement max length?
We've had a few requests from users to allow for longer vote statements. They've come in the form of asking for an option to change the max length, but I'm not sure we want another setting on the proposal/poll form.
I asked someone what value they would use and they said 500 (rather than 250).. it seems reasonable to me that we could just change the limit to 500 characters, rather than making it configurable.
Reactions to this?
Off the top of my head I can't think of any harm coming from this.
Ok we've had a spike in enquiries so I'm going to go ahead and do it.
I don't know the dev time and/or risks of making it configurable. However I certainly think it's highly desirable, if feasible, to let groups define their own limits. (P.S.: Devs can strongly recommend the default setting if they desire to.)
Ok this change is live. I agree that there are cases for allowing the proposal author to specify a limit (or no limit) but after asking all the people who asked, they all said 500 chars would be satisfactory.
Generally:
- Adding in-app, (per proposal or group) configuration for this is expensive and everyone asking for more chars said 500 is good enough to enable them to do what they want to do.
- I don't want to have unnecessary configuration options, they're overwhelming
- If someone wants to make this configurable, or pay us to do so, please be my guest.
- If someone running a private host wants to make this configurable per host, that would be quite simple, please get in touch if you want guidance on that.
500 sounds good to me; the same as a Mastodon Toot... :)
