What should be the "WeBrussels" Name to go for election in 2018?

RM Rick Mendes Public Seen by 477

This is an important discussion to have, right now in Brussels many initiatives overlap each other, most of them have the name "brussels" in their name, but what connect them all is the will to change Brussels without waiting for anyone to do so, some initiatiaves are mapping what alternatives are out there, others are doing bridges between citizens and public/private actors in the ecosystem, each are generally focused on one particular approach, WeBrussels being the only one geared to go IN Politics, with all the compromises, coaliations, and dirty political games that comes with it.

"BrusselsTogether" wanted "WeBrussels" to consider using their name since they already aggregate and put in the spotlight citizens approach to fixing Brussels in many areas.

At the end of the day, it's good to not re-invent the wheel, but it's also good to have our own approach, so between WeBXL or Webrussels that might work for French speaking people, or English speaking people, How are going to pick a name that will represent the diversity in Brussels and have inclusiveness built-in ?

This is a copy of the email from Joris:
It is fun to talk about different names but is has to be congruent with the identity, a name without a logo and other visual aspects is nothing.
WeBxl is and will always be googled as WEB-XL, its a great name but it does not work, also it excludes both french, dutch, arab and other spoken languages.

We got to get together with some professionals and see the options and contingencies of the name we should all be able to unite behind,
Its quintessential to have serious propositions before we everybody is still welcome this friday.

But here are some suggestions of names

Sara meaning both pure, happy, noble, its a shared name by all religious and non-religious, emphasizing to be a pro-women movement. good, clear neutral name, recognizable.

Brus-que, showing an abrupt break with classic politics, works in many languages.

Brus-lala, a more humorous approach, also lala from Eulala means wellspoken

Isme (bxl), it means "my name" in arabic but also who is the party? is me! thirdly means esteemed as a name.

lets get going

It has become a common habit to have an English name and resort with other languages under that unique English name. I don't see any objection to that.

I prefer We Brussels as it does not really require explanation as a name. WeBxl on the other hand sounds like some kind of script requiring explanation.
The issue about Brussels Together and We Brussels cannot just be a decision based on "lets work together" . Of course We Brussels has to collaborate with existing groups BUT unlike exiting groups WE Brussels seeks to convert desire for political change into a vehicle for political change. Moreover, We Brussels cannot become a political party that "represents all shades of civil society". We Brussels has to have a political manifesto and then others can decide if it "fits" for them to collaborate. At this stage we do not have a political manifesto, we have some elementary ideas for a "code of ethics" which is important BUT the debate about what We Brussels will stand for has only just started. For me WE Brussels has to have a core political manifesto that puts people and planet before profit. We need to use the technique of "confluence" to bring together different groups and start a process of political discussion so that we can create with them a common political platform that will form the basis for collaboration so that we can take back control of our city.

Thank you Haroon. Actually, a lot of work is going on in different corners. Here is the link to the first draft of the common dream for Brussels. (It is similar to a manifesto but only has positive ideas that we strive for.) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pwU6mPw_0t7Ws7kKEXrZF_pA4hLrW-c7vFC5x7lf-AM/edit?usp=sharing

You are right that this is only a very very very first draft that needs discussion and input from everybody. But it also has to remain flexible as we cannot know how our ideas change as we learn.

Finally, I am sorry that I have not managed to bring all the documents together in a coherent manner. I promise to start working on the wiki today.

I read that there will be a meeting on this topic tomorrow:

Friday evening at 20:00 Guillaume van Haelen 132, my mobile nr is 0476 971 671. @jorisvisser wrote that somewhere and Ricardo Mendes copied it in #slack #aganda

Mmh that's a name for a project but here, it's for a name for the election (a name that people will need to understand quickly like "En marche", "Barcelona en Comù", Parti Socialiste or Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn ;-)), look at here :

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_partis_politiques_belges_francophones
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_des_partis_politiques_belges_n%C3%A9erlandophones
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partis_politiques_espagnols
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partis_politiques_d%27Islande
https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcelone_en_commun (this one is even in Catalan)

Don't forget that we might touch all kind of people in Brussels to have a chance (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruxelles#Langues) so we must speak their language. But let's have some advices from experts on that.

Ok. So it looks like there is convergence in the idea of keeping WeBrussels and BrusselsTogether separated. Works for me. Let's move on.

On the name, I'm much in favor of WeBrussels. Keep it simple and stupid. Something that people can easily remember. And yes WeBrussels.org would be a much better domain name than webxl.brussels (unless you can snap we.brussels).

Onward!

Dear All,

I really regret that nobody was able to attend the meeting about the name of our movement on Friday. I know that we want to move on but this is a very important decision and maybe we have not reached the people who want to contribute. To avoid a stalmate, I would like to make some suggestions.

First, making a proposal is courageous. I would like to thank all of you to propose names and in particular Joris who has suggested a number of creative names with interesting arguments. Thank you very much for that.

Second, I want to make this a positive experience that is testing our systems. A name for a movement is important. We need to have as many people as possible to engage with the decision. However, we feel that not enough people are participating. I am afraid that this will be a recurring challenge for any political movement. The 1, 9, 90 rule will hit us each time (1% of the people have the courage to propose, 9% will engage in the discussion, 90% of the people will remain silent.) So this is a good test for our movement. Let’s use it to learn: We have a draft decision making process that we can apply to this important decision. The process is on our wiki. Let’s try to apply the process and see where we can improve this process.
https://mediawiki.webxl.brussels/wiki/WeBrussels_Decision_Making_Process

Third, I think we need to agree on a process and timeline. I know that we are under time pressure but deciding takes time. (Another frustration that I think will come back many times.) Good news is: I think we have gone successfully through the first step: i.e. a group of people (10) propose an idea. Can we agree on the next steps? The current process suggests: We, the proposers, contact a facilitator who can advise us on the process to follow for this decision. I am not a facilitator but I presume the process will include a phase where we contact experts and a phase where we reach out to a wider audience to get the biggest possible feedback. If nobody else wants to take this forward, I am happy to contact one of the facilitators who are happy to support our movement and ask for their suggestion for the process to follow. I will of course copy all of you or keep you informed through the preferred platform (Slack?).

Fourth, since the process will most likely include an element of contacting experts, could you please already suggest names of people who we can contact. I know that Daniel has already proposed a few names. Do we know of others?

Please let me know whether you have strong objections to this way forward. I share the frustration that we need to have a name fast. I also agree that the people in the room are the right people to decide, on the condition that all those interested are aware that the decision is being made. I think that it is here that we need to make a bit of an extra effort. We need a bigger constituency for this decision even if we end up with the same conclusion.

Thank you! Looking forward to hear what you think.

I was present, we had an interesting discussion, I took notes, will provide them this weekend if I have the time to synthetise it.
