Conflict Resolution

L Loie Public Seen by 178

The main purpose of this thread is to decide:

Should the Conflict Resolution Person INTERVENE or WAIT TIL SOMEONE ASKS FOR SUPPORT?

I, Lorelei, am the current Conflict Resolution Person within Giveth. I come from Restorative Justice.

Restorative Justice says wait til someone initiates. It says that the people who are closest to the problem are the ones who hold the keys to the answer. More than any central authority, they should be lifted and empowered at every step of the process. This means owning whether or not a process is initiated. Even from the way a resolution process is begun, it can either centralize towards or decentralize power away from a Judge, a Mediator, a Boss, a Leader, even a Facilitator who thinks they know what’s up. In action, this means that basically ANYONE besides the facilitator should initiate the process before the facilitator does.

HOWEVER, I have a few times received feedback from the community that they wish I was stepping in more. My reasons for not doing so are to keep with the decentralization that I hold valuable in justice and conflict, and in Giveth. But I’m open to crafting a different approach if people feel it would be beneficial! I think also just having this loomio discussion will raise awareness of the fact that I am a resource to be called upon if any conflicts come up and thus will have the effect of more facilitation support happening, which seems to be what folks are asking for.

Please give your opinion in the Ranked Choice poll on the right!

The interesting bits here to me, are the "see something" and the ”those involved" parts.

Some degree of surfacing issues is necessary though not necessarily the responsibility of any one role in the organization. And in many cases, an issue affects everyone in the organization - sometimes even more than any individuals seen as central to the conflict.

Decentralization requires that we all step into leadership - leadership of self AND of our domains, which includes and requires management of our emotions especially when we work together on projects of passion.

When I look at the many issues, conflicts, divisions I have witnessed and/or participated in - there is a primary quotient that inhibits healing and an individuals ability to celebrate conflict as a highly valuable prize awarded to those who work in communities that are culturally diverse and ethically rooted.

Emotional Intelligence. And the great thing about this, is that in can easily be developed and increased. Recommending some resources:
