What did you think about the results of the natural resources inventory? Did it spark any ideas or concerns? Did you learn anything new?

@Kara Douglas Also, please consider joining us for our Chapter Open House on May 24th. There will be stations for discussing different inventories with us in person and brainstorming potential next steps.

@Kara Douglas Hi Kara,

Thank you for taking the time to read through this chapter! You're right, a thorough understanding of groundwater resources is important for informing the town's future. This is why we decided to pull out freshwater resources as its own inventory. It pulls in data on ground and surface water, the studies that have been done to date, issues facing these resources, and actions the town has taken so far. We should be posting this inventory in the next week, so keep an eye out!

Dear Judy et al:
Thank you for forwarding the work done thus far on Harpswell's Natural Resources Draft for the Comprehensive Plan. While the considerations covered are worthy and helpful, I was especially dismayed to see that groundwater resources and aquifer mapping were not discussed. As building continues with few zoning checks in town, having an accurate and comprehensive understanding of the limits of our drinking water resources is imperative to the sustainable development of a place with very quickly draining soils, the potential for salt water intrusion and no access to a municipal water supply.

Perhaps this work is being done but there's no data to report yet? If it isn't, I would urge you to advance this initiative to the top of the Comprehensive Plan's priority list.

I'd be very happy to have a conversation in person or by phone to share some of my own experiences with our limited water supply and am willing to help advance this directive if further volunteer involvement is necessary.

Thank you for the work you're doing and for keeping people well informed of the progress made thus far.
Respectfully,
Kara Douglas

My first impressions: much more scenic value than shown. Also, nothing on songbird populations, for example Mitchel Field supports a Bobolink population and mowing of the field has, I’ve heard, tried to accommodate their breeding times. What is the relationship of songbirds, etc…to the amount of pasture vs. wooded area and are we losing populations because of development? A. Haible
