New effort: Architectural mapping of software tools

Lynn Foster PublicSeen by 322

This is an invitation to the people who were at least at one time interested in the Open Apps Ecosystem to get involved with an effort starting over in the Collaborative Technology Alliance hylo group. I see this as one in a long list of steps that will be useful in getting to an Open Apps Ecosystem.

Here is how to get there: https://www.hylo.com/project/301/architecture-of-collaborative-software-tools. I think you will need to join hylo first, and then the Collaborative Technology Alliance community. Please ping here if you want to do this but have technical difficulties.

Here is the current description, which is very open to changes by the people who will be collaborating on this.

Suggested output:

1. Architectural diagram of existing software available for solidarity groups to use.
2. Detail on each piece of software included, filterable.

Goals:

1. Solidarity groups working for change on the ground could use this as input to assembling software infrastructure needed for their group.
2. Software developers can determine where there is overlap and thus opportunity for collaboration; where there are gaps and thus opportunity for new useful software; and where interoperability would be most useful so that it can be developed.

Speaking of architecture, that website has terrible architecture. All the content, even just plain text, is completely unable to be shown at all without JavaScript.

Lynn Foster

@wolftune That's too bad. I started this there because there is active discussion there right now, and a bunch of diverse people gathered, a few of whom are enthusiastic about doing something like this. If you are interested, and really can't function there, let's figure something out.

Aaron Wolf

@lynnfoster I am very interested, and I can turn on JavaScript and use the site at this time, but it's just unfortunate and bad practice. No website should be like that, and it does present potential issues for accessibility and other things. I am not really personally affected, I just noticed the issue.

Lynn Foster

@wolftune glad you're interested! The hylo software is pretty new, but I'm pretty sure there will be a way you can let the devs there know your opinion.... :)

Greg Cassel

@wolftune there's a "?" button in the lower right corner of the Hylo screen which will open a persistent chat with the Hylo Team. Someone or other will probably respond to questions and concerns there within a couple of days. You could also address serious concerns publicly in Hylo's github; probably the front end repository in this case.

Hylo's under pretty serious ongoing development.

Aaron Wolf

@gregorycassel I don't see the "?" button. I'm guessing it's a third-party proprietary privacy-invading thing that is being blocked by uBlock Origin or something else I'm running. The whole Hylo site seems to be obnoxiously embedded with proprietary tools and trackers and such. I'm not trying to judge conclusively, but just reporting my experience. It's a quite lousy first impression. I saw that they are on GitHub with "unlicense" for their front-end, not sure if their backend is proprietery… Anyway, I tried several things being unblocked and didn't get their site to show the "?" or to look quite right.

Josef Davies-Coates

@wolftune @gregorycassel I couldn't see the ? either - and yeah it was ublock origin that was blocking it (and possibly privacy badger too, although I'd already turned that off to get other stuff on hylo to work), although at first just turning that off didn't work, but when I closed the tab and then went back to hylo again it did appear.

But yeah, lots of proprietary third-party short-cuts have been made on hylo, hopefully over time they'll be replaced by other tools.

Have to admit I'm so far not to impressed with hylo either, but I've heard from many people who've had lots of contact with Edward West and others in the team that they've got very good intentions and good future plans and so think it is best with give them the benefit of doubt :)

Bob Haugen

I don't think anybody in this discussion is promoting Hylo. The fact remains that Edward's Medium article about a Collaborative Technology Alliance attracted a whole lot more people than either of the attempts to do so in Loomio.
(Although I have to say that the original Loomio announcements of the Open Apps Ecosystem also brought in a lot of people. It also led directly to at least two actual collaborative efforts, the Value Flows project and Holodex, and I think influenced another, TransforMap. I don't know if similar actual collaborative work will emerge from the Hylo conversations, but Connor Turland is certainly trying to get it to happen.)

Bob Haugen

And echoing Lynn, my goal is also to get collaborative efforts to happen for real, not just talk about them. As @jonrichter says, we are all working on the same system.

Mikey

super keen to independently write this up with anyone interested.

first pass from an old set of notes:

  • authentication (who are you)
  • profiles
  • relationships
  • notifications
  • comments (may be either threaded or channeled)
  • events (invitations)
  • decision-making
  • intent-casting
  • commitment (contract)
  • accounting
  • invoicing
  • newsletter (broadcast)
  • accountability / reporting
  • resource (inventory) management
  • time tracking

Bob Haugen

  • matching intents (offers with wants or proposals)
  • coming to agreements (conversations for action)
  • making goods
  • distributing goods
  • providing services
  • exchanging goods and services for other resources (i.e. income) (maybe money)
  • distributing income to contributors to the goods and services that provided it
  • value equations for distributing income
  • allocating funds (e.g. Cobudget)

Collaborative tech (I don't know if I can curse, so going conservative) f**king rocks. It's at the nexus of fast-paced evolution where all the technomemes get together and have their meme children, the product of the world's highest quality idea sex.

I guess I provisio that a little bit: It should be real-time interactive, or it doesn't count much, imho.
