Starting the crowdfunding intiative, the benefits of DIF and the online platform

SS Shailaja Shah Public Seen by 215

Ranjan was very supportive of the open source approach, believing in complete transparency and sharing learnings so as to replicate models, improve upon them and thereby maximise impact.

DIF could certainly benefit from this approach to use as one of the main funding platforms, financial and impact reporting methods and also documenting and updating our DIFmaker community. This will certainly make our intitiative highly scaleable and replicable, and thereby help benefit anyone who needs to adopt/ approach us to assist them.

Use of technology would act largely as enabler especially mobile and internet in the field, and also help in rapid development and exposure for communities we seek to assist.

Of course as Ranjan believed the proof is in the prototype, we'll go ahead and implement the School Project to se how it goes, so that everyone , from super enthu cutlets to skeptics can see for themselves

I think announce this on Nov 9 instead of trying to mobilize by 9th. Let's announce all projects together and kick off. Crowd funding is the way To go

Sajith, don't you think its better that Shai and Priya get started and work on this now, if they can? just so that we have proof of a working prototype before we throw it open to the members? this will help reassure most of us too, who have never worked through such a system. and what better way than to announce that the concept works on the 9th of Nov and say,"…this is the proof of the working prototype and we are happy to announce the first scholarships today which have been collected through this format which we highly recommend and propose for future initiatives." what do you think?

we could also collect funds through the usual channels - cheques only made out to KCC, as that would ensure trust.

Sajith, it would be really nice to actually test out the crowdsourcing way and a least start with something, else there will be little loss of momentum....the 5 scholarships are for craftsmen kids, a dream for ranjan as a part of commemorating him on his birthday and announcing a scholarship and funding it in his name, which will create a good feeling among the ppl of katlamara, and yet allow us to kick of scholarship for design , research etc in his name across institutes. What is your main reservation against this?

SA

Sajith Ansar Fri 2 Oct 2015 9:26AM

The reservation is to show that DIF is a mix of many things. Not just funding the school. That we speak about design, craft school all together on his bday

Just thinking out loud. It will have the same impact. I am open if you guys still feel we should announce this. We can begin all other dialogues meanwhile too offline and build the frameworks

Talking aloud too.....I certainly am with you on not wanting to sending mixed messages, but think we can create a background for why we are doing this - perhaps its crowdfunding 5 scholarships to assist craftsmen to educate their children and continue sustaining their craft. We could also crowdsource 2 scholarships for 1 DIP project and a research based craft doc ready to announce it as soon as possible, hopefully on the 9th - one for Katlamara Design centered, and perhaps the other as a research project? This way we would be able to test how these channels are doing to understand how we can work with them better and also that if our doubts are well placed, or can be alleviated, This will also in turn give us a chance to understand what we need to do about entity registration- if its a priority or not.
