#idea:
It would be nice if the 'Show More' sections were expanded the first time a user visits a page.
Is this hard?
I feel like the whole "show more" thing is a bit weird... It'd be nice if we could find a way around it.
I'd be willing to experiment with killing it. I think it might go some way to encouraging brevity.
I wonder if we could A/B test that sort of thing? I.e. turn off Show More for half of the groups, and after a fortnight see if your hypothesis is correct.
It would be nice indeed @matthewbartlett ! But I'm guessing kind of a nightmare to implement at this point?
I hate show more and I think it should be remove entirely.
I would suggest that instead we have a 'Jump to comments' link
@robertguthrie, you have by far the coolest avatar I have ever seen!
@mattlemmon Awwww, shucks! It was drawn at an Enspiral retreat as part of a game. I'm not sure who the artist is.
That's awesome, they deserve some kind of an award for it... or a badge! Just another affirmation of the positive power of Enspiral!
Please do NOT kill show more. There are some discussions where the context is pages long.
I think it is a sub-par solution and if we think about it there might be a better way to solve the 'sometimes the context is too long' problem. I think it's sub-par because it introduces the 'sometimes the user misses half the context' problem.
Humour me with a thought experiment @alannakrause, a world with no 'show more' button. e.g. What if, when you went to a discussion page, it automatically scrolled you to the right spot to read all the new comments?
@richardd.bartlett scrolling down automatically would mean you dont see the title of the discussion. I think you need that. The context is only really important if this is your first time on the page or someone has updated it. It seems like if this is the case the context should be expanded. If not then it could be truncated like it is currently.
I like that Mr Thornton - sounds like a nice compromise that addresses both potential problems.
Is part of the dissatisfaction with 'show more' the way it looks sort of messy? I like the way Doodle visually represents the option to expand something out - a nice intuitive accordion thing: http://doodle.com/324qqye2brvah86p?
Who doesn't like an accordion!?
What do people think about the 'Jump to comments' link?
IF we have that then you don't need to expand information when you're deep in thought about what you're reading, but those who think 'I just wanna read the comments' get an action with exactly what they want.
'Jump to comments' is okay, but it means you have to click it every time you visit a page with a long context.
How about: the context is expanded by default, but there's a 'collapse' button that remembers it's state for each discussion.
Yea... i think i like that @richardd.bartlett with the addition that if the information changes we need to have a way of indicating this to users so it's not hidden beneath the collapse
This is awesome, seems like we're coming to an elegant solution here.
@robertguthrie perhaps the collapse button could have some sort of graphical indication that the contents have changed.
I've thought the same thing. Nah, should be easy. We've got a DiscussionReadLog table which keeps track of which discussions the user has read.
On a related note, I think it would be nice if we had an option to keep the discussion wiki expanded (for things like documentation).
