ENVI @ WB SCF - successes and disappointments

MV Marko Vujacic Public Seen by 439

So, 3, 2, 1, let's go!
Welcome, looking forward to our debates! My name is Marko, I will be moderating these discussions on the environment, in the next month+, awaiting the Trieste summit. I did not participate in these online forum type discussions in a while, so I am quite excited to see what changed in the world of online debating in few years.

For the first thread, and until more participants join, I would like us to touch base and ask you to outline (*in few sentences) key successes, advantages, and/or disappointments, even failures, the Civil Society Forum on ENVI had so far: from Berlin, via Vienna and Paris, towards Trieste now. Kindly, please focus on 2-3 key points, so others could be able to read it and comment/reply. My idea is to first identify the issues of concern, and then we move forward. If need be, we will open/develop other threads to address issues more in detail.

One BIG thanks to all of you for your inputs so far! On behalf of the Heinrich Boell Foundation, I would like to let you know that we will consolidate your inputs from this discussion and put them up for a vote in one week. This public vote will enable us to transparently select up to three topics to be discussed during the Civil Society Forum in Trieste in July 2017. Outcomes of these consultations and those of our discussions in Trieste will result in a Western Balkans CSO Declaration on Environment, Energy and Climate Change to be included in the overall CSO Declaration that will be presented to the WB Prime Ministers on the WB Summit on 12 July 2017.

So, your inputs remain really important. Please, consider that only those topics to be proposed by WB CSOs here in this consultative process will be discussed in Trieste and presented to the Prime Ministers. We are looking forward to your inputs. Consider forwarding the invitation to your CSO friends and colleagues to join us in here and in Trieste!

I would like to stress the need of promoting direct action parallel to policy making. Where most of us fail in the region is when our papers, policies or studies get ignored by the politicians. When we get ignored often we dont do nothing about it, and i feel that this is a waste of time and materials. We need to combine policy proposals with direct action in order to be successful and to make sure that our voice is heard. We have been stressing this during Paris Forum as well, but still not much has been done in order to put more light to grassroots organisations and their success stories, in order to stimulate and inspire a stronger link between think-tanks and grassroots. We have some very good examples of success stories coming our of such a collaboration in Albania. I would suggest that we add this to the agenda as well, along with policy proposals. The better the CS is organised, the more they will listen.

@besjanpesha Agreed! Do you have any success stories from Albania or elsewhere in WB6 to share with us here?

New paper on regional cooperation from the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung is out (attached). Environemtn/energy/climate change topics do not hold a prominent place there, if at all. What do you all think?

I am attaching a description from one of the best actions we have organised so far against fracking and environmental damages from an oil company in Albania.
