Simplification of notifications, an iterative next step?

With the newly refactored notification and events, it is very easy to select what notifications we want to display. It seems at present the system is cluttered with some information that is duplicated by the activity counts on the Home and Group page. There is talk of a new Home page or activity feed which could possibly make the notifications redundant. In the interrum an iterative step to clean up the current system(as it is now a simple process), may inform future development.

My personal inclination is to simply ditch 'started a new discussion' and 'commented in a discussion'. These two are the main clutter for me, and the activity flags these actions.

I'm unsure - I personally find it really useful to get both of these notifications. The thing is gonna be considering the whole system all at once to remove redundancy where possible. Would love to see a schematic of all the current notifications systems mapped out so we can see where things can be tightened up

I'm just going to regurgitate what I've been saying for a while. Sorry everyone.

The goal is to show the user what meaningful activity has occurred. Since most activity is related to a discussion, I think having a discussion centric activity list is appropriate. In this list a discussion is only displayed once, and there is some supporting information about what activities are causing it to be listed as relevant.

This will remove the redundancy that we see in the notifications widget.

Finally for things that require the user to acknowledge them, we have... the notifications panel. this would only show things that require you to acknowledge that they have happened... like being mentioned, or facilitator duties you must preform.

And a while ago I proposed a wireframe of how that might look.. I simply added another drop down (but it could be a page or panel), one for this activity stuff focused around discussions, and one for notifications which need acknowledgement.

Robert Guthrie

sooo yea.. i propose an iterative next step of using the code i wrote for this purpose and the mockup i made. :)

Hey Rob. Sorry to disrupt your digestion process. If the notifications are discussion centric, then does it make sense to put them on the global tool bar? One option would be to put the discussion activity dropdown on the individual discussion's list-item on the group page where the comment activity currently is located. This would eliminate some duplication. I am starting to feel the words tangling and the need for a mock up to express my thoughts...
