Press Release Strategy #OpJourno

The April 4th self imposed deadline for the press release has passed. Should we wait until the event has shaped up a bit more and the themes and talking points are more fully developed?
Will writing a press release make us focus on what we think we're doing and form solidarity amongst us and the Occupiers out there who need it ?
#OpJourno Who will we send it to? If we give a respected news entity a chance for an " in-depth an " exclusive" and make sure that reporter is attended to and has image story right - it 'd be better than scattershot mass emails.

Creation of an Outreach 'Stirring' Committee for NatGat 2014 Closed Mon 28 Apr 2014 11:08PM
It appears the frontliners for the Stirring have stepped up! We can discuss how to move forward on the weekly call!
I propose we empower a group of individuals to work with Press Release Group to create an ongoing horizontal process to cultivate community partner leads to target outreach efforts.
(i.e. online method of submitting potential partners/ occupy movement members to use for social media & email outreach)
Let's leverage LOOMIO this way:
You like idea & would like to help: "Agree"
You like idea but cannot help: "Abstain"

I'd like to see this happen so we can know who to reach out to on Twitter.

I think everyone should be doing this outreach, not only a specific group, and bringing the partner leads back to the group.

added later: I think I am unclear on what particular group we are empowering, but let’s empower everyone!

Loomio is not the proper place to make press releases. Loomio is not a media outlet.

I support developing this together on Loomio and/or another mode/platform, then bringing a final draft press release to the full NG3 Organizing Group for consensus. I would like to hear more from Julia on what she feels we should use instead and why.

Justin Tue 22 Apr 2014 1:32AM
Sally you are right. Too bad you are not joining the group- we'll make sure to create something so all info is easy to share.
Best way to avoid duplication of efforts.

Sally G Tue 22 Apr 2014 1:36AM
Who said that I was not joining the group? I think that we all are, or should be, part of the group.

Justin Wed 23 Apr 2014 2:04AM
Sally you may want to re-read the proposal in where I Suggested:
Let’s leverage LOOMIO this way:
You like idea & would like to help: “Agree”
You like idea but cannot help: “Abstain”
We need to DEFINE this 'everyone' you suggest should be in the outreach group...

Sally G Wed 23 Apr 2014 11:15AM
O.K., I am suggesting that everyone working on planning NatGat should be reaching out to those that they would like to see included; not have to be part of a group to do so.
This seems more complex than necessary, although maybe I am not reading right: empower a group to create to cultivate to target? Don’t we simply need a place to store information on who has been contacted, who has accepted, and what the needs are? As I read the proposal, it sounded bureaucratic and, for lack of a better word, “marketing”. If I am wrong, I will surely reconsider. Help!

There's an awesome bottomliner in Sacto, Cres V who used to be a reporter there and is now a lawyer. He agreed to work with the press about NatGat.
I think having a team of spokes people who have talking points and clarity of purpose will help the journalists deceive what is happening and have reliable contacts for quotes.

Justin Thu 24 Apr 2014 5:49AM
Sally the ONLY question on the table is if we want to empower this group & if we want to be on it.
That group will work out all these details.
We need to stay focused when discussions move to proposals.
Things typically move to a proposal when there already seems to be some growing consensus.
We can continue the discussion about the nature of the outreach once we all weigh in on this one part in question.

Tricia Thu 24 Apr 2014 12:11PM
I don't think changing the process by using "abstaining" by meaning you like the idea but you don't want to be on the committee. It's like asking two questions. I think is a good idea right now to keep it simple and not make new rules to complicate the path to consensus.
If there's to be a stirring committee - then someone can propose to bottom-line and call for help in a separate thread.

Bobby Thu 24 Apr 2014 4:13PM
press releases should be a semi ongoing thing... small with big updates
Julia Clark Thu 24 Apr 2014 4:41PM
@justin2 Huh? What are you proposing?
You want to use loomio for press releases???
Or just to vote on them?
The media group has a page to work on and can present
I do not get the proposal . Do you want another media group?
Julia Clark Thu 24 Apr 2014 4:53PM
Maybe, I do not get what he is wanting to do....
If @justin2 is wanting to make a break off group in the media group really there is not that many people working media yet to have sub-groups
I am really confuse as to what is being proposed

Justin Thu 24 Apr 2014 5:08PM
I am not wanting to DO anything-
I am trying to help us use Loomio to express the work going on in a transparent way.
Anyone working on the media group should vote on this do they can connect & the rest of can see who we can contact.
You all have been working for months on this & a larger community would love to join the effort- by defining things here (even if we're all on the same page, already) it allows a simple, clear way to get caught up.
I've been spending hours going through all the past emails, the pads & facebook group postings & still can't make heads or tails out of things..
Loomio is great in that it can be leveraged in MANY ways-
It is a powerful tool for coming to consensus & also a transparent way to externalize choices already made.
Trick is this:
Look at each Loomio post with fresh eyes & see what's being asked-
Here it is just to define the empowered group which has already been working hard on effort.
Lots of history with past work so help us late comers understand.
We need people to focus on the area they are most passionate about as more people come on.
Folks can participate in all efforts but empowering & defining who is in these groups is key to scaling things.
Breathe & re read.
We're using Loomio just so the stakeholders can step forward in this case.
Julia Clark Thu 24 Apr 2014 5:19PM
Ahhhh. The emails.... You know what I do with the emails I get them as individual , read the first email ( don't scroll down) flag it or discard it.
Then go back and discard the flagged emails which have already been solved.
If there are any I need to or want to address I address them .
I do not follow links, I do not download.
Then I move on to loomio.
After loomio I graze the pads for new content ( new content is always at the top of the pad list. )
Then I do what work needs to be done,
Like for example, I promised to get a collection of jpgs up. Those will be uploading while I am working on the on at hand things.

Kerri Fri 25 Apr 2014 5:05AM
i am also confused by this proposal. press release and outreach are separate things to me. completely. Daniel has written 2 versions of press release in another thread, and the media team has already been hashing this out in calls. outreach has been ongoing for at least 6 weeks already. i and others have spent dozens of hours on it already and are compiling the results here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AniDumEdHNeedDU1eTlLZlhPSDloRjlnS1Ffc1MtQlE&rm=full#gid=0

Sally G Sun 27 Apr 2014 11:27PM
One reason to not create a press release on Loomio is that there is no way to see edits as there is on a TitanPad (strike-through text, for instance).

Stirring Committee= A Horizontal Occupy Version of Steering Committee.
We all add to the soup & stir it together.
