The Student Advisory Council (SAC) is a body comprised of two student representatives from each cohort and two faculty advisors. SAC has worked hard to create a myriad of student centered changes at the UW School of Social Work. Most recently, SAC has worked with the SSW administration to continue to develop shared governance, a process where students would have increased input in the running of the School of Social Work. SAC is where students like you can build the confidence needed to advocate for future clients in large bureaucratic organizations by advocating for your cohort in the complex University system.

Time: You can anticipate SAC requiring a weekly time commitment. Although SAC members only meet twice a month, you can expect to be in regular contact with SAC members to complete project commitments. That may include answering emails or attending small group meetings with fellow SAC members, students, faculty or staff. SAC representatives are allowed to miss no more than 2 scheduled meetings. Virtual attendance is an option for those unable to attend in person.

Passion: It is essential that you are passionate about lasting change at the UW. The SSW we have today is the product of many iterations of SAC striving to make the SSW an inclusive and just learning community. Although the work of SAC can feel like baby steps, it is essential to making large scale change. You will be working on projects that may not come to fruition in your time at UW but will certainly better the SSW for future cohorts and will ultimate improve the quality social workers in the field.

Representation: Along with our own passions, it is important that we can stand aside and speak for a variety of perspectives and needs of your cohort. This commitment also includes being visible as a representative, being in regular conversation with your cohort about their experience of the program or university and being a source of information about the activities of SAC.

Collaboration: SAC requires an ability to collaborate honestly and earnestly with students, faculty and staff. This includes being communicative about your sustainable capacity and availability.

Consensus Decision Making: SAC meetings will run on a consensus decision making model. This model and variations of it are often used in activist communities and other grassroots organizations. Learning this skill with help develop your problem solving and egalitarian communication skills. A workshop on consensus will be provided.

Leadership: Taking leaps of faith and trusting in yourself to speak on behalf of others is an essential skill in the field of social work. SAC will give you opportunities to build confidence in a supportive environment of other learners.

SAC will meet on Mondays generally twice a month, from 5:30pm-7:00pm. The forecast meeting schedule for the 2019 - 2020 academic year is as follows:
