Loomio

Invite existing users to join group, instead of automatically making them a member

When you invite a person to join a group, there are two situations:
a) When not Loomio user, the person has 100% free to decide. I think this is perfect
b) When a user of Loomio, is adhered or added automatically to the group and therefore has no freedom of choice.

I believe that this is not perfect, nor correct. In case of not wanting to integrate into the group, is already integrated and therefore must leave the group.

Es evidente para mi que la libertad es la capacidad de decidir

Si es invitación, no es imposición
If the invitation is not imposition

Is this an issue for all Loomio users, or does it only happen if a subgroup coordinator "invites" a parent group member to the subgroup?

Alanna Irving

I think I understand what you are saying @carlosgallogaravan - maybe it's not right that people should be able to add you to a group without your explicit permission.

Right now, if someone us not a user, they get a message saying "You have been invited to XYZ Loomio group" and they can decide if they want to join. If they are already a Loomio user, it says "You have been added to XYZ Loomio group" and you are automatically a member unless you leave.

There are many instances where it's a lot more efficient to be added into a group and start getting notifications, etc, right away. But I can understand why people don't want to be dropped into a group without their permission, even though they can always leave.

Clarify the purpose of this discussion, regardless of whether group or subgroup
a) Gred and Jacob, have no account Loomio, I send them an invitation to join the group "Players" and have complete freedom to decide whether to accept the invitation and when.
b) The reality is that Gred and Jacob Loomio users are therefore to invite the group "Players", Loomio automatically adds the group "Players" and if you want Gred or Jacob not belong to the group "Players", you must access the group "Players" and options "Leave group"

I hope I have clarified the need to always decide, because a) is to decide and b) can be understood as imposition

Carlos Gallo Garavano

if the invitation is not imposition
freedom of decision, 100%

It's probably not a big issue in Loomio now, but could be bigger when Loomio gets really big and we have immense networks of Loomio acquaintances who may 'invite us' to dozens of groups.

On facebook, I definitely discourage people from adding their friends directly to discussion groups for controversial topics. I've seen many cases where people were confused by their sudden membership in a group, and didn't like the group's principles, resented being associated with it, and 'acted out' against it.

That's exactly why we have this point #4 here in our admissions guidelines, for my main group (Bridge the Divide):

"Admissions
We approve admission requests unless any of the following seem to be true:

  1. The account appears not to belong to a live individual.
  2. The person's visible activity or self-representation is incompatible with our group guidelines.
  3. The person has been removed from BTD in the past and has not addressed the reasons for the removal.
  4. The person appears to have been added by someone else without their consent."

Deleted my previous comment. This now makes a great deal of sense.

I agree with the views expressed by @gregorycassel

@alanna perfectly interpreted the subject in question

For me, the main thing an issue of freedom of decision
