Extending proposal deadlines

Richard D. Bartlett PublicSeen by 37

We've seen a lot of feedback asking for the ability to extend proposal deadlines.

Is there any reason why we couldn't have a feature available to group admins and proposal authors to extend the deadline?

Jon Lemmon

No reason I can see that we can't do this.

I think it could also be to shorten the deadline. The reason I say this is because admins/authors have the ability to close a motion, so why not be able to just make it shorter as well?

Aaron Thornton

There is a slight difference. If you can shorten the deadline then this action would need to be recorded in the history, otherwise this opens up room for exploitation. If a proposal is closed the admin is recorded as responsible. If the proposal expires by itself then it is not.

IMO there should be a history item for any activity: proposal close, deadline extended or reduced, context edited, etc.

Would be really good to show very clearly that the date has been changed, and who changed it (in interests of transparency)

Jon Lemmon

Sounds like it's time for some mockups...

I agree, lets just do it knowing it will improve over time

As far as I can tell this is something else which is now done and this is another discussion which ought really to be closed/ archived and I shouldn't've even been able to make this comment :P

Richard D. Bartlett

@josefdaviescoates what value would be added if you couldn't comment on this thread?

Seems to me if someone wanted to talk about changing this feature it would be handy to be able to continue the conversation in context.

Josef Davies-Coates

@richarddbartlett the value isn't so much in not being able to comment, as not have to trawl through so many discussions, many of which are about features that have already been implemented and/ or where decision have been reached already.

Richard D. Bartlett

@josefdaviescoates why did you have to trawl through so many discussions? Sorry I'm not being a jerk, I'm just trying to identify specifically what problem you're pointing to, to make sure we design exactly the right solution :)

Is it that you want a list of discussions & decisions specifically marked as 'needs my input' and 'doesn't need my input'?

Currently there's no way to make this distinction, but I'm not sure it's a totally bad thing: for me one of the liberating aspects of working in this flexible version of consensus is the sense that I can safely ignore a few decisions here and there and trust that the group will do fine without me. It turns out that my natural desire to read every last thing and always add my opinion is not necessarily always the best thing for the group!

Josef Davies-Coates

"why did you have to trawl through so many discussions?"

I guess mostly because there isn't yet a search feature!

I think perhaps the new/ forthcoming inbox https://www.loomio.org/inbox would largely solve the issue of knowing which discussion exist that I might want input on.
