Getting OSM Wiki United Kingdom up-to-date
I'm sure that this must get brought up at regular intervals....what are your opinions on taming the 'United Kingdom' part of the OSM Wiki? There are lots of hidden gems in there, many under 'UK Project' which could be revisited as a Quarterly Project.
I don't understand the category structure enough to be able to apply it consistently to pages. Is there an overall plan somewhere?
User Verdy_p appears to have done a lot of Category structuring throughout OSM Wiki and would probably be good to talk to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/User:Verdy_p

I do use categories as I take my cue from Wikipedia whose editors are very keen to get new content tagged up. I'll start a Google Sheet on this later this morning and we can see how it all looks.

Categories are useful if there is someone who is organised enough to make sure they are used consistently.
Dont work if some pages are left out of the category, so someone creates a new pages with almost the same content.
Worth giving it a try.

I've done a bit of programming with the Mediawiki api so am investigating visualising the current structure.
Try not to be drawn into making immediate changes as it looks like opening a can of worms.

There's also the category Category:British tagging guidelines
I'll have a go at improving/updating parts of https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_retail_chains and https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/United_Kingdom_Tagging_Guidelines over the next few months. :)

One wiki change I was meaning to do for some time, is rename the page "UK group" -> "OSMUK". So I have just done it! https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSMUK (and fixed various incoming links and redirects)
That page should now be the wiki page describing what OSMUK is. There's no need for that to be a big description of many sections, since we have a osmuk.org website for that. Also there's no need to link off lots of UK related information from the "OSMUK" wiki page. We already do that from the "UK" wiki page.
The OSMUK page should have the logo on it though. This one I mean: https://osmuk.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/logo_horizontal_color.png who has that in SVG format?

hey @harrywood - here's the OSMUK logo as an SVG.

Jez will review OSM Wiki UK page content, categorise the pages, and diagram the current structure Closed Sun 11 Nov 2018 12:02PM
As a light-ish touch we won't attempt to update pages, just see what there is. We can then make decisions on how to proceed

Do people use categories? I've never used them and was barely aware they existed.
Might have to make them more obvious if the plan is to start using them. I guess we can link to then via the main UK page.
