The Freerange Academic Imprint Needs a Name!

BK Byron Kinnaird Public Seen by 40

We've have been developing an academic branch of the Freerange Cooperative Press, and we need a name for it! This Imprint would be tailored specifically to scholarly work relevant to the Freerange Cooperative, meaning it will have a tighter editorial focus, and allow the Freerange Press mothership to maintain its expansive and all-inclusive outlook (through the journal, online, and other print projects).

In developing the academic imprint identity, we came up with these considerations:

a) Respectable and recognisable brand (but not droll) to authors and readers.
b) Related to ‘Freerange’ and/or ‘pirateship’ brand (not critical)
c) Represent a niche focus on a nexus of architecture and 'political life' in the city.

From a long list, we've narrowed it down to SIX! And we're keen to put it out there for feedback, so let us know what you think in the next WEEK (until OCT 17th) and from there we'll work toward The Name!

The Short List (with some thoughts):

  • Beacon Books
  • Crows Nest
  • Highwater
  • Closerange
  • Bootleg
  • Scaffold

There has been some chatter on Twitter about this. A few people have rejected all of the ideas as not doing justice to potential of the name. One positive suggestion is some version of the word Catenary. Which I like, but there is also a publisher in Canada called The Catenary Press.

Another comment that came via Facebook was questioning the reason in the first place for 'starting from scratch' by departing from 'Freerange' (eg. Freerange Scholar).
