New Basement Proposals

RZ Rosalind Zavras Public Seen by 23

I want to thank you for your patience and dialogue here. After a few weeks of meetings, emails, phone calls, slack threads, etc. we now have two new basement proposals.

The idea is that it became evident when I spoke to everyone that clearly establishing the uses of the various parts of the basement was a gap. It's also important to establish the norms and guiding principles of the basement and our artistic workspace. I would argue that a similar process could be done for the other floors as well.

I want to give a big shout to Qinza here. Her time, care, and love for the space has been evident and I appreciate her willingness to have dialogue throughout all of this.

I also want to thank Patrick and Chris for their work on the original document. Amelia for her countless meetings on the basement and space. Jerone, Michelle, Marcos and Dave for providing feedback.

This has been a labor of love by all individuals and the voices throughout these documents are that of the collective. Therefore, I would stress that we look at these proposals as their own language (and not assume that any one person wrote any one portion.) Please discuss, vote, block, approve, as you see necessary.

I see an ambiguity in this paragraph. The two sentences prior to that state that "This is only for construction and maintenance supplies. Due to health concerns, this is not a usable space." So it is a usable space -- meaning that work can be performed in that space -- provided that trained members are wearing PPE?

If you'd like a different word than 'usable' please suggest one. It's not usable in the sense that it is dangerous and you need to be both trained, have equipment, and be aware of the context. It's not widely 'usable' because of that

Point of clarification regarding Art Proposal: the proposal makes reference to David's tools and supplies for building maintenance. Are those supplies kept in the dungeon/crypt or kept elsewhere in the basement? It wasn't clear to me from that proposal where they are located.

The first part of the basement is not completely an art workspace. That is the point - the area in the beginning, near the "building fixtures" is a building maintenance space. Please note that these are not only David's tools. There is also a tool library there which are PPAC-owned items that are used by many individuals. Remember "The Art Workspace portion of the basement is indicated by a strip of multicolored paint on the floor."

I think my original comment wasn't as articulate as it could be. It was not clear to me whether the "variety of tools and building supplies" referenced in the Art Workspace Proposal were the same as the "maintenance and building supplies" referenced in the Basement Storage Proposal as being located in the dungeon. I'm assuming, based on your response, that they are not. The Basement Storage Proposal mentions the 3 storage racks and open table, as well as which members currently have supplies there; the tools were not listed as being part of that space. Since I'm not that familiar with the basement's layout, I want to make sure I understand where the Art Workspace Proposal is locating them -- i.e., they are with the three storage racks/open table, they are in the dungeon, or they are in another spot on the other side of the multicolored paint strip that is not in the art workspace.

They are on the other side of the multi-colored paint strip. The "northwest wall" as mentioned in the basement storage proposal is where everything lives

David gave me a short tour of the basement, and I am now clear on what goes where.

Note from the future: After COVID, the basement usage is being revised and re-visioned currently and there will be a link to follow (including reference and based on this work).
