last weeks meet in dublin, national conference, and Irish EcoVillage Network,Astraea CoCarlow

ok just wanted to say a few things re last weeks meetup...(will be repeating some stuff)which i missed!
but the conversation we had included a national meetup, that aaron suggested,i talked a bit about my interst in low impact permaculture based eco-settlements,the Irish EcoVillage network as platform, and Alan mentioned setting up a salon or regular meetup.I also suggesetd to jules was a tiny house group would also be a possible group.

Generally the idea around national conference was to have various 'spokes' (representing the various 'communal living interests' eg Co-Housing,Low impact Eco-Settlements/villages,Co-Op Housing, etc.I would also think that maybe Camphill communities may have a 'spoke' or part of the picture to offer aswell,as communal/intentional/community living comes in many different forms.

I had thought it was Jules organised last meeting, but it was Aaron(?)anyways my suggestion was that primarily at the mo,its about getting numbers of people who are interested in this stuff.Cloughjordan for instance ran a series of meetings with hundreds of people interested, before 'one' group ame together to 'realise a solution'.Anyways my point being, that both people and work is required before anything begins to 'form'.
So i suggest having a regular meeting (forthnightly)as there are many people in Dublin who are interested in this, and who can come together and maybe start progressing on ideas.
aaron suggested the national conference, and i would see that alongside as running the regular meetings(might be best to simply run together at the mo,and then as more people get involved the load can be shared...again Aaron, might have made the mistake that you organised last thursday meeting, thought it was Jules)

ie much work needed, and sometimes these things can be let float unless there is enough memebers for momentum.I know at least 3 or 4 people in Dublin who are very interested, but are not on loomio, and just to point out that 'colab housing' and ecovillages etc are related so maybe getting a wider picture might be impoartant, until some 'spokes' begin to form.

Re:IEVN i have visted Tom Butlers in Carlow and suggest maybe those who are interested can group together and organise a visit to toms. His website is Astrae, and is open to discussion, ideas etc on building a community/eco village in Carlow, near Tullow.
Also there are other sites with land owners interested, but i think its worth having a good study on all this stuff,as all potential sites, locations, groups etc are different, and some may not suit for various reasons...location,ethos,investement etc,etc

anyways .....thats the story so far

Hi Manus,

Thanks for the recap on the evening.

The spokes on the wheel idea is a really good visual representation of the various forms of Community Living that the Irish Community Living (un)Conference would encompass.

The idea of a regular meet up and also Allan's idea for the Salon are great.

I'm going to create a proposal now for the day of the week the fortnightly meeting regarding the Irish Community Living (un)Conference will happen. Maybe we could try and get these to coincide with a regular (non-specific) meet up or Allen's Salon. That would be awesome :)

Aaron

PS I didn't organise the meet up, it was @samtoland Thanks again Sam :)

Just to let you know Co-operative Housing Ireland and the Centre for Co-operative Studies are planning a Community Housing Conference in early April 2017. Perhaps we could meet for a chat in the new year to discuss how we could work together and avoid duplication

Hi there,

Just to give people a quick update, myself and Geoff just had a chat and we'll be meeting up during the 2nd week of January to discuss working together. If you're interested in attending the meeting just drop me a line.

@manusmcmanus @aaronkeohane it was nothing. Still gutted I couldn't attend in the end, but glad to see it got some people energised!

@aaronkeohane @geoffcorcoran great to see that their might be space for cooperation here! :)

I recently attended platform.coop conference in New York - which was structured as 2 days conference, and then 1 day unconference.

The unconference was amazing, and by the end of it I think all the participants had wished it was 3 days unconference.

But having said that - the traditional, curated conference part (lectures, showcases, panels) provided a great base for the unconference. It also attracted some great people who might not have otherwise participated in the unconference (and who enriched it alot).

Not sure about the exact way forward, but making the most of having all the interested individuals in the one place (from the academic to the pragmatic) is really powerful.

Yes, I've had a very positive experience with unconferences too. My background is in democratic education and every year the European Democratic Education Community Conference takes place in a different country for 5 to 7 days. Usually this included two days of lectures. But the feedback from the participants was that the unconference days were far more valuable and so this year they are scheduling 20 minute TED Talk style for the start of each day which will be set speakers and the rest of the day will be run unconference style. IT was felt these 20 minute talks could a) attract some big names to speak and b) spark some ideas and set the tone for the day. So this might be something that we might consider doing ourselves.
