Elected Council for Executive Powers

G GP Public Seen by 13

I think that Nintendo Papercraft is undergoing an administrative catastrophe, since most of the members with executive powers are inactive:

  • Drummyralf, for money, contests and servers
  • XenonRay, for blog management
  • Me, for management and support

Therefore, I think we should democratically elect a board of executives just like we elect the winners in a contest. These people could have administrative or simply contributing powers, like updating the blog and moderating the forums.

Here's a example of the democratic process:

  1. Members on the forums would be invited to select, in order of preference, whoever they would see fit as the next member of the chair. One could list as many people as one would wish.

  2. When the preset voting deadline would be reached, votes would be collected and organized in the following design: the longest list becomes the template list for distributing the points, since the last position from this list earns a single point, the next-to-last position earns two points, and so on.

e.g.

AB BAC ADBC DBA > VOTES, IN ORDER OF PREFERENCE
43 432 4321 432 > POINTS EARNED
A=13 B=12 C=3 D=7 > TOTAL
1st:A 2nd:B 3rd:D 4th:C

By periodically renewing the administration, we would end up with less obstructions, thus more possibilities for new activity.

I absolutely agree that the power needs to change hands and move away from inactive members. However, I do have misgivings about the proposed system. Please note that I do now necessarily think it is a bad idea (quite the contrary) but I am concerned about how the system might be used and abused. Please also note that I have significant experience in the management of small communities from my orchestras and clubs.

Firstly, I know from personal experience that community voting tends to become a popularity contest. A candidate who is very experienced and qualified for the position can very easily be defeated by someone who is greener but more well-known.

Secondly, I'm concerned that there wouldn't be a sufficient number of candidates, given the state of affairs on the forums at the moment. Few members are regularly active and in a position to take on additional responsibilities.

Thirdly, I can see scope for people abusing the system. Particularly given the previous point about a shortage of candidates, I can readily envision one person retaining power for a long period of time, with no-one willing to run against them. In addition, I can also envision a new member joining the board solely in pursuit of power. This is also concerning if such a person is in the treasurer position and they embezzle money from the site. It would also be essential to regularly re-elect the board and have a system in place for a vote of no confidence to reduce the scope for abusing the system.

Finally, I am concerned that the majority of our members - particularly those which might run for such time-intensive positions - will be too young and inexperienced for the job. Again, there is the issue of money management and the potential legal issues with a minor having access to the site's money but also other issues, such as hosting negotiations.

I feel I must abstain in any votes, as I have a vested interest in retaining the current system. May I also remind everyone that, despite my misgivings, I am generally in support of this change or one like it.

I am 100% in support with the above comment.

Young and inexperienced... And here comes the 12 year old! Anyway, I agree with Byte in many ways, I do think there might be a few people just stalking the forums and waiting for the perfect time to become a mod or admin.

HOWEVER, about having a minor that has access to the website's money can be entirely avoided. (Please note that I am not speaking for myself or trying to set anything up.)

Since these elections could be used for something else, say, blogposters, since in my opinion, one semi-active blogposter isn't enough, not just for people to help boost the site.

About a popular candidate beating out a less popular and more experienced candidate, things such as interviews via PM could be in order. After all, Enrique Peña Nieto didn't become president, or candidate by saying "I wanna run!"

I don't want to be any of the executive powers even because I know I will end up abandoning everything (look at the posts for example, it's a lot since I last did one and now the only thing I do is check the FB NP page and see if someone asked something), but I have an idea that will avoid the crawlers: in order to be a participant the member has to be a known one and so have reputation so that the crawler possibility is minimal (isomeone with a reputation actually faking could be the only possibility).

Let's put it another way: If I left the forums suddenly, who would take the reins and how would that person gain its powers?
