List discussions by group on Home page

This is just an idea initiated by Rob Guthrie. The idea splits the overwhelming home page into group summaries.

It lists the new activity in human readable form as well as maintaining the current representation.

A group can be clicked into by clinking on its name.
There is no need for a group list on the right.

Just thought Id put this out there as a conversation strater

I like it!

What happens when there is a lot of activity in a lot of groups? Is each section paginated?

Aaron Thornton

I reckon it should be fine to just list it down the page as it is only there until you visit it. If it was really a problem, which I dont think it will be, perhaps the activity could be collapsable?

Aaron Thornton

Actually the discussion row could be a lot slimmer now we don't need to display the group name inside.

I don't understand. Say there are 50 new discussions, are you saying they should all be on the front page?

Aaron Thornton

If they are all new, would you want them to be hidden or do you want to be aware of them all? I personally would want to see them all but i guess they would bubble to the top as people commented on them anyway. I am just kind of imagining this to mirror an email digest to some extent.

Nice! For some reason it looks way less overwhelming when it's divided into groups! I would've thought showing up to 5 per group with 'show more' to expand out could work well maybe?

Jon Lemmon

Great starting point! I think you would definitely want to only see the first 5 (or so) discussions per group.

Also, new since when? Since you last viewed the dashboard? Then if you visit the dashboard and hit "refresh" the page will show up blank upon the second page load.

I'm thinking that maybe a simpler starting point could be to just keep things exactly the same as the existing dashboard, but split it up into groups as you have done. It wouldn't require much additional code and I think it would be an improvement over what we have currently. And from there we could think about where to take our next step.
