OPEN SPACE sessions at OPEN 2018

OS Oli SB Public Seen by 100

This thread is about how to propose, and vote on, open space sessions for OPEN 2018.

We're hoping to arrange the open space sessions before the conference this year, to save time at the event.

To put forward a proposal for an Open Space session, or vote on other proposals, go to the Poll https://www.loomio.org/p/Z8RtgJrm/open-2018-what-do-you-want-to-discuss

To add your proposal:
Use the "ADD ANOTHER OPTION" button (below the list of existing proposals) to add your proposal. Please include your full name at the start of your proposal so we can contact you about running your session and provide full details about what your planned session will cover. NB: if you want to add a proposal, you MUST do so before you vote - you will not get the chance after you have voted.

To vote:
Drag the existing ideas into order, with your favourites at the top, and hit VOTE.

Any questions, please ask below:

Go to https://www.loomio.org/p/Z8RtgJrm/open-2018-what-do-you-want-to-discuss and scroll down the page a little. It shows you the current options in the voted for order. Immediately below that it shows you what you voted, and immediately below that it says "CHANGE YOUR VOTE" in pale blue capitals. Click that and you are away.

Hi everyone. I've been asked to facilitate the Open Space and wanted to offer a few thoughts on what makes this technique so brilliant (see also https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Space_Technology).

I think it is great to think in advance about what you'd like to have as a session. But the power of Open Space Technology comes from taking responsibility in the moment.

Harrison Owen originally designed it as a way to have mimic the best of conferences - the coffee breaks - and avoid the worst - lots of prepared presentations.

Hence the Law of Two Feet: "If at any time during our time together you find yourself in any situation where you are neither learning nor contributing, use your two feet, go someplace else."

In short, Open Space Technology works when people take responsibility for what they need in the moment of the conference. I'll be running it on that basis.

By all means, suggest sessions on Loomio. On the day there will be a 'marketplace' (when people who are there suggest the sessions they eant to start). If, at that moment, the session you've suggested on Loomio is still relevant - you feel a tug in the stomach to suggest it at that moment, rather than feeling you have to because you had mentioned it here - then definitely offer it to everyone.

And then, to quote the principles, "Whoever comes are the right people" and "Whatever happens is the only thing that could have".

There you go @maryfee1 - check out the NEW #FairCoop proposal. Think it could be described as LETS 2.0 🤓 https://fair.coop

I don’t understand how the voting works, but my open space is not about the ideal world we want, but about how in today’s Europe a coop platform can be the answer to Uber etc. And where the economic dilemma’s are dealt with.

I have decided to remove my proposed open space session from the list - i.e. "Incentives for co-operation: How can different categories of business and other organizations, not least co-operatives, be encouraged towards greater co-operation, especially when working towards goals for social and planetary benefit?"

In attempting to prepare some simple introductory slides, it quickly became apparent that the problems with which I'm concerned here will take far too long to sketch and would allow insufficient time for useful interaction.

The most fundamental questions with which I had intended to start begin with categorization of "operators" in increasing dimensions; structural coupling and co-evolution; scale, topology and richness of connectivity. I had hoped to get to the point where we could start to ask meaningful questions leading to the design of appropriate "currencies", measures, signals and feedback loops to match resources to needs sustainably within planetary boundaries. Any attempt to paint a complete picture within 45 minutes would (I now believe) be futile. Instead I've started structuring this into something I can share by other means in due course.

However, I expect many of the questions will emerge in the context of other presentations - and maybe some of the answers too - so I look forward to many interesting conversations over the 2 days.

Hi John Waters. I understand how difficult it can be to introduce needs for conceptualisation to extend open co-operation at level of a market.Topology, connectivity, 'currency' design, metrics for measure, event & right management, etc... must be considered, as you pointed out, in order to leverage and ease freedom of association for chosen social objects... I will be glad to exchange with you next week. I am challenging these requirements in order to introduce associative liquidity in our current merchant market. [email protected]

Hi John Firmin Robert - "markets" are only a small part of the picture, and I'd like to see that aspect become increasingly smaller over time (as we progress to a less extractive and more needs-driven economy). I've started to regret withdrawing my suggested breakout session, but the realist in me knows that 45 minutes would barely allow us to start scratching the surface of the problems we're facing.
