We have a first draft of "policy paper" https://europeancommonsassembly.hackpad.com/Urban-Commons-SQJ1iJrcOLp whith some examples of organizations involved in right to housing and right to the city and perspectives.

We want create an active working group about urban commons issues**. We could identify groups or experiences of urban comming to strengthen the first "policy proposal" and maybe propose a process toward the Madrid meeting.

Here is a useful resource to get some more people involved - list of people who had a discussion on urban commons during our ECA meeting in Brussels:

First, thanks to David Juarez for starting this conversation. It’s clear there are a lot of people working on urban commons - perhaps too many people to discuss all at once in a skype call. So I really insist that we start sharing our ideas on the European Commons Assembly loomio with a thread dedicated to the Urban Commons working group : https://www.loomio.org/d/3rsFTvSY/urban-commons-working-group

Specifically, we can start to come up with a plan for building an urban-commons based program for the Assembly at Madrid in October. This should include some pre-work before the event so it’s good to get started now. I have to say now that we do not have the travel fund secured yet for this event so participating is not currently guaranteed. We are in the process of finalizing a one-pager to give an idea about the meeting.

As Torange explained, we also are planning an urban-commons based ECA in 2018 at the Tate (and possibly outside London too). So there is a lot of room for continuity in how we approach this! Looking forward to your input :)

All the best

Really good perspective for the european urban commons working group ! But, I think we need articulate the european perspective with our local groups to take care the plurality of context and actors (for example in Grenoble we are principally involved with social movement in popular neighborhood with community organizing & planning methodology).

Concretely, our local group in Grenoble has begun to work on public space mapping from Nuit Debout movement to the Barcelona declaration (outcome document of the Habitat III thematic meeting on public spaces).

MC3 PUBLIC SPACE

And maybe the barcelona declaration could be a guideline to complete our urban common policy proposals ? We discuss the document during the feerless meeting (9-11 of June) ?

in solidarity

Message from Stéphanie - Interphaz/ Lille

We are organizing a 2 days event in Lille (North of France) on 20th & 21st of June on Urban Commons. We'll have several workshops on those 2 days and during the same week a Citizen Summit will be organized on a major wasteland in the center of the city.

We'll also be glad to propose an exhibition on this issue. The idea is to propose a large-scale exhibition in the same time we implement the seminar for people already more engaged in the field. Everything is in French, I do apologize... but maybe some of you would be interested to join us.

Posting again here a message on our organization for Barcelona and Madrid:

As promised

-Pad on June 9 Event, for reference/ points out issues we need to answer please COMMENT: https://europeancommonsassembly.hackpad.com/ECA-side-event-at-Fearless-Cities-9Ygo7Tp55HS

-New Pad on Madrid- focus on the CONTENT section: https://europeancommonsassembly.hackpad.com/Madrid-concept-for-ECA-at-Transeuropa-9WQMHUQkYe3

I am also including as attachment the one-pager (from the ECA perspective) that was circulated to the groups we met with last week in Madrid. The issue I found was that our “ask” and what we want in terms of content wasn’t coherent enough. I think we need to clarify the ask at the end of this document and probably also adjust the framing. I talk about this in the pad on Madrid under CONTENT - please COMMENT, let’s get some ideas flowing before the call next week!

Cheers
Nicole

Greetings @nicoleleonard and @planninggroup (David) @staccotroncoso and all Urban Commoners. I am your New Zealand offsider, based in Wellington where we run a national programme (funded by municipalities) that redirects former commercial sites for community purposes. Most of the occupier projects are temporary but there are several that are emerging as long term spaces as a result of the temporary relationships. see www.urbandreambrokerage.org.nz

I am also undertaking a PhD on public art & commons between Copenhagen University and Victoria University in New Zealand and attended the ECA last year in Brussels.

I am attending most of the Fearless Cities Summit as I am happily being flown back to Europe by the city of Helsingør in Denmark to present this brokerage model at a city regeneration event. However I have just had news that the event has been moved to June 9th, meaning I won't be able to make this side event - a sad coincidence. But I look forward to seeing you again and meeting new faces during the weekend. Please keep posting your plans for any other ECA events on the 10th-11th. Perhaps I might even find you in a bar later on the 9th. Thanks for your work and important network. Ka kite ano - see you soon
