About "OpenMandriva Lx" Definition

Hello,
We need a clear definition of OpenMandriva Lx (what it is, the goal etc)
This is not a motto (we already have one: "A pinch of Community, a pinch of Passion, a pinch of Innovation, flavoured with fun")
This is neither the definition of the association by itself (described in our statutes, and voluntarily vague for being able to be flexible)
This is really about the linux distribution by itself. We need first a simple "about" phrase (or maybe two) understandable by anybody, an objective easy to follow. This sentence is very important because we will clearly define what we are planning to do with it (And maybe we don't all have the same idea). It will be on front page of our websites, and media pages (facebook, g+, etc)
This will have to be approved by all the members, but I suggest to start gathering ideas, coming from TC, cooker, all the other teams and pods.

@raphaeljadot It sure does :)

...also "the non-profit OpenMandriva Association". I would prefer to say that "it aims to be a operating system developed international to be used by everybody, independent of skills or characteristics of usage". also "it aims to be used, independently of the platform structure or age, for science, development, server, or simply browsing. OMLx aims to be everywhere for everybody on any circumstance."

@joaoazevedopatricio1
On one hand - fully agree with you, on the other - could be too early for such vast descriptions (targets)? I mean, I see fully right, what you say, but this is not there yet. May be to keep the definition a bit simpler for now?

João Azevedo Patrício Tue 20 Aug 2013 9:00AM
@katelebedeff I understand you. Maybe I missed the point of this "description", and thought that it was supposed to be a kind of mission description. For something short and clear you can go for "OMLx is a Gnu/Linux distribution aimed to be free, fun and fabulous good loking! :-)

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 10:07AM
@joaoazevedopatricio1 the problem with "free software" is that some people may confuse with free as "gratis", and maybe openmandriva Lx could not be considered as totally free (as in freedom)

João Azevedo Patrício Tue 20 Aug 2013 10:20AM
@raphaeljadot I disagree, but I'm ok with it. the fact is that not all the open-source is free as in free speech (as in freedom) :-) but it's ok for me, I have no will to influence this description in any way, just shot some opinions.

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 12:08PM
@joaoazevedopatricio1 @katelebedeff @benbullard @anuragbhandari I'm trying something taking in account all you remarks.
OpenMandrivaLx is a Desktop Operating System aimed to be free and and to provide a wonderful user experience!
It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern Gnu/Linux distribution, very user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 12:10PM
In the first sentence, I use "Desktop Operating System" for people that doesn't know what is Linux. In the second one I use more specific (precise) words. WDYT

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 12:13PM
About using "Mandriva Linux", while I was unconfortable with it, I think it's normal to be proud of our origins :) Some people follow us because they consider us to be the continuity of Mandriva. At least, for now :)

João Azevedo Patrício Tue 20 Aug 2013 12:36PM
@raphaeljadot Where will this description be? How will it be used?

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 12:50PM
@joaoazevedopatricio1 everywhere :) Websites, social media etc. It describes the OMLx project exaclty.

João Azevedo Patrício Tue 20 Aug 2013 1:06PM
@raphaeljadot this is my phrasing suggestion: "OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users."

João Azevedo Patrício Tue 20 Aug 2013 1:09PM
I have no problems using the Mandriva name I just believe that having a name like "OPENMANDRIVA" is quite enough. It's a "eternal tribute"... People are not really stupid and find the match, but like I said I'm ok with this all.

Raphaël Jadot Tue 20 Aug 2013 1:18PM
@joaoazevedopatricio1 you've got a point there :D
So the two options would be then:
- OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.
Or
- OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It offers a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.

Yep, Joao's point is valid but my sense is that mentioning the Mandriva legacy thing will make it more clear that we're actually carrying forward the good work of Mandriva, so people do not think OpenMandriva is just a community [test] initiative of the corporate entity Mandriva .
That is, I think it'll help to make it clear that Mandriva is dead and OM is trying to move it forward.

Raphaël Jadot Fri 23 Aug 2013 12:39PM
I'll wait this week-end so that intersted people can join loomio, and then make the second proposal.
rugyada Fri 23 Aug 2013 4:26PM
I'm for the second option. Without Mandriva legacy thing because we're describing our project here and now, and hopefully the future. For the roots, we have history.

Davide Garatti Fri 23 Aug 2013 4:34PM
Hello, for me, we should not mention Mandriva, in each case the name of the association and distribution are already sufficiently clear.
It is not so difficult to understand that we are a continuation of Mandrake / Mandriva

Raphaël Jadot Sat 24 Aug 2013 12:30AM
@davidegaratti @rugyada thanks for input... This is apperently a topic where people are divided. Wdyt if, for example, we keep the reference to Mandriva for, let's say, 1 year and after that we remove reference?

Davide Garatti Sat 24 Aug 2013 6:09PM
Frankly speaking, I think it is much better to choose one of two options, with no changes. choose a road and keep the route.
Kate Lebedeff Sat 24 Aug 2013 7:33PM
@raphaeljadot This topic would also be discussed next Thursday, right?

Raphaël Jadot Sat 24 Aug 2013 8:03PM
@katelebedeff Sure, we should!
Ben Bullard Mon 26 Aug 2013 12:15AM
I think OpenMandriva is all the mention of Mandriva necessary. Let's move forward. People interested in the history can/will do their own research on the Internet.
Colin Close Mon 16 Sep 2013 8:21AM
Having read the discussion I'd like to say that I am not sure about this proposed sentence.
"OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience!"
The "wonderful user experience" bit sounds like something that might come out of Steve Ballme'rs marketing department.
I have attempted to reword the ideas a little and have come up with the following.
OpenMandriva is an exciting free Desktop Operating System which aims to stimulate and interest first time and advanced users alike. It has the breadth and depth of an advanced system but is designed to be simple and straightforward in use.
What do you think?

Raphaël Jadot Mon 16 Sep 2013 6:42PM
@waynesallee I like it :) We can open a proposal on it

Raphaël Jadot Mon 16 Sep 2013 6:42PM
oops i meant @colinclose I like it :)
Chris Tanner Tue 17 Sep 2013 4:03PM
I like it as well

jclvanier Tue 17 Sep 2013 11:14PM
I like it as well
Ben Bullard Tue 17 Sep 2013 11:20PM
Yeah. I like also.
Per Øyvind Karlsen Tue 21 Jul 2015 7:53AM
the current motto sucks donkey ball still and will be perceived as very childish and naive, while straight as dumb,,,
Raphaël Jadot · Sun 18 Aug 2013 2:23PM
@benbullard thanks for your proposal, the second one may satisfy @anuragbhandari i guess :)
