Start here! How to use this space

Usage

Take a look at our Loomio usage guidelines. Please add any questions as comments to the doc, or in this thread.

If it's a specific question about a particular brief, please add this to the thread of the brief in question.

Community guidelines

Please be polite, respectful and friendly in your interactions. We are all doing vital work supporting civil society to respond to urgent needs, with valuable knowledge and insight to share and learn from. Be great at giving and getting help.

This is an experiment in how we might create a more open space for contracting digital projects. The aim is more collaboratively-reached agreements and value created/shared throughout the process. There will definitely be things that need improving, so please help us make it better :)

With love from the Catalyst team x

Seems I've arrived unfashionably early 😐

Hmmm, the age old dilemma. Should I pretend I was never here, leave and come back in an hour or dive into the snacks because once I start talking to people I'll forget to eat 🤔

...snack early, snack often is always my advice.

One very minor bit of feedback... even with only 4 projects, it took me a while to get my head round the different projects and remember which one was which.

"Building a strong approach to engage remotely with non digital users" blurs into "Remote onboarding to build trusted relationships" and then I get confused when navigating the site.

Titles would be more memorable is they highlight the concrete facts: the budgets and the names of orgs. E.g. something like - "Engage Remotely - Stroke Association et al - £10,000"

Thanks Andy. Very good nugget of feedback.

Definitely agree with this. Particularly once we decided we weren't the right fit for a project - we continue to receive notifications and difficult to determine which project was which.

I agree with this too

Another thought, for what it is worth...

Normally when I receive a brief my first reaction is ‘I have no idea what the client is after’. The brief seems like a bunch of words strung together. I understand the words but I can’t glimpse the bigger picture of what the client is hoping to achieve.

Often I'll have a quick phone call with the potential client (perhaps to arrange a time to do the pitch!) Within a few minutes of chatting, the projects becomes so much clearer.

I reckon that voice is better than the written word for communicating a brief.

As an experiment, for a future brief on Open Projects, would it be worth creating a 5-minute piece to camera, outlining the key points?

This could be really rough. Ideally, you’d create it just after you’ve created the Miro board with the cluster charities. A quick spoken summary of the shared needs that emerge from the Miro session would be super useful for kickstarting a fruitful discussion about how to approach the project.

Really like this idea @Andy Bell (SIDE Labs) :) We may not have any more cluster projects of this type, so that might make things easier in future, but agree a spoken summary could be super useful for partners and help the nonprofit(s) articulate their problem area as well.

thanks Ellie, glad it wasn't a ridiculous suggestion :-). (just for clarity, I don't think the suggestion only applies to cluster projects... I think it would be useful for any project.)

Ellie, I just want to thank you for setting this up. I think it has the potential to turn into something very interesting indeed. The real test for me will be when I see a project that we are interested in. Note to self: remember to unsubscribe to a thread after voting "This one isn't quite right for me ". Thank you again.
