Loomio

"@all" feature that lets you @mention all users in a group

It would make me joyful to be able to type "@all" and know that every member of my group received an email notification with my comment.

Am thinking this might totally replace the need for the current "Email all group members" functionality, which is hidden away in the 'Members' menu and I suspect hardly gets used.

The HipChat implementation of @all seems to work really well, and people tend to use it wisely.

Thoughts?

I was actually going to raise this feature... however I have also used this type of functionality within a large organisation and it can be abused pretty easily - useful feature if you can ensure the implementation of it also educates the user in the appropriate use of it.

In saying that, it is a +1 from me.

Good point to consider @camfindlay1. I wonder if that risk could be offset by a notification when an @all comment is posted (i.e. "are you sure you want to notify all group members?").

Just an idea, and maybe only necessary for groups beyond a certain size - I think in the vast majority of current Loomio groups, things are small enough that it wouldn't be problematic.

Hi @benjaminknightloom I have the experience with the use of @all in Redbooth (task management tool) and it takes time to tell people to avoid spam behaviour.
We end up using it only to call for a meeting or for an important message to all members, but not for discussions. Some people may think that they may have a really good point or just want to engage a lot of people on a personal argument and makes inappropriate use of @all ... not sure if it is a good idea.

I prefer Slack's @everyone keyword over Hipchat's @all; it's a little more descriptive/personal imho, and since it's a little more cumbersome to type, it gets abused ever so slightly less.

Robert Guthrie

I like the @everyone.. but agree that it's not fun when people abuse it. It could be listed in the member permissions for a group. So one can choose if coordinators or members can use it.

Maybe each user can only have 1 @all per week :)

I've wondered in the past about little notifications when a user's in-app action is going to have significant email implications. E.g. when you are about to start a proposal, or when you type @all into a comment, you'd see a little "13 members of your group will receive an email about this" turn up beneath the action button.

In addition to ideas above, I think it would be nice to have an option for each group's admin to set:

  1. Anyone can initiate @everyone
  2. Admin can initiate @everyone
  3. @everyone is disabled

Having @everyone only usable once per week could cause problems if someone has a genuine reason for needing to use it twice.
Along with Anthonys suggestion, could there be a link in the email when you get a notification for an @everyone mention to report when you feel someone has used the mention incorrectly. Then say if a certain number of people report it the person who sent that notification could get a tactful message to ease up and maybe a one day @ ban or something.
