Should we make Freerange a formal Co-operative company
http://www.business.govt.nz/companies/learn-about/other-entities/co-operative-organisations
A co-operative is a form of business organisation that is owned and democratically controlled by its shareholders/members.
A co-operative is also known as a 'mutual organisation' or a 'co-op'. The organisation is run for the mutual benefit of its shareholders/members. The organisation is established so its shareholders/members may purchase goods or use services of the organisation, rather than being established for the purpose of earning profits for investors.
There are a number of forms of co-operative or mutual organisations but the key feature of all these organisations is that their main purpose is mutual support for members or the promotion of a specific purpose or social benefit.

Should we make Freerange a formal Co-operative company Closed Fri 14 Sep 2012 11:21PM
At the moment Barnaby is basically running Freerange as a sole trader and doing a great job but this is a big burden on him and not the most democratic structure possible.
Please join in this discussion and let us know your thoughts, issues, questions on the value of making Freerange a legally constituted co-operative company.

Mainly I like this idea because it means shared governance, and sharing is good right?

I am keen to be more involved in Freerange press, and I think that those who are involved should have some say on how it is run, run it themselves in fact

I think that Freerange should become a co-operative because it has so much potential to become a transformational agency.

Hi everyone, as I said in the email. The main reason to have this conversation is not really questions of how to become a co-op but we are more interested in gauging whether you think it is a good idea. Do you think it will make you feel more involved, and lead to a stronger clearer freerange? or do you think it just means more 'things-to-do', or you don't really care that much?
