Interesting situation just appeared, with someone signing up without being invited: https://social.coop/web/accounts/2935

Until we have our custom member registration system – I'm working on it – it's possible for anyone to sign up if they know how to find the https://social.coop/auth/sign_up page.

Funny because this goes in the direction of what we were discussing yesterday...

Thoughts?

I say: let's have people subscribe by themselves and then file for membership using the form..

rough user experience if the co-op decides this person doesn't meet the criteria, glad you made it here but we're booting you...

I didn't realise the new user's toots were DMs to me. Reposting bellow. Thoughts?

  • Hello, Mayel! Well, I want to discuss with you my staying here. I also want to be completely sincere with you. I know that registrations are closed on your instance, but I was able to get in through the about page. I've been searching for a small community with a nice and short URL, and then I found this place. That's why I cheated my way in.
  • I usually toot about my day and my cats. Sometimes I toot about the TV shows I watch and the games I play. I also share musics I like and some other new discoveries. Sometimes I toot about web design as well. If you allow me to stay here and none of this topics are interesting to the community you created, you can feel free to silence me. This way I won't polute the local timeline.
  • I honestly have no idea if I will be able to make donations to help you maintain your instance. Brazilian currency is way less valuable than dolar, which makes really hard for me to become a patron. If you don't allow me to stay here, I will totally understand your decision. I just wanted to make myself clear with you before making this place a home for my toots and thoughts. Hope to hear from you soon.

This is a great test case! I applaud her enterprising spirit, I guess, so I'm not inclined to ban her. But it does make me think that we should clamp things down a bit if we all agree that we want this to be a mainly co-op-focused community. But I think we might want to consider the following workflow:

  • Require approval for membership, allow for 1 month free
  • After one month, dues payment or documented excuse or alternative (such as payment through labor)
