New décor discussion

Discuss the new décor ideas!
From the last meeting we have:
- Gas mask totem pole
- Absurdly re-purposed power plant console

Jeffrey Reinten Fri 23 Oct 2015 1:22AM
@andrwwaugh @enervatix @nicolescherer
So this weekend for totem poles and scrap yard excursion?
Nicole Scherer Fri 23 Oct 2015 1:35AM
I can't this weekend as mentioned. Sorry, guys. Maybe Sunday - but it's a maybe...

Andrw Waugh Fri 23 Oct 2015 1:40AM
Rory's got a thing on this sunday.
He's exhibiting stuff at a maker faire

Rory McMahon Fri 23 Oct 2015 6:25AM
I'll be down at the maker lab from around 10am on Saturday morning.

Jeffrey Reinten Fri 23 Oct 2015 7:34AM
Can I come?

Ariane Bingham Fri 23 Oct 2015 9:15AM
Of course @jeffreyreinten !! Many hands make light work! See you there! 😃

Ariane Bingham Fri 23 Oct 2015 9:16AM
Do we need to bring anything from home for this? What materials will be used/needed for totem pole?

Andrw Waugh Fri 23 Oct 2015 9:51AM
Another proposal (at some point)
Badass looking DJ table.
Currently we use a trestle table with some fabric on it.
It's ok. It keeps decks off the floor.
But it's a central focal point.
Why not make it look awesome?

Andrw Waugh Fri 23 Oct 2015 10:00AM
Alternatively (or additionally)
a facade that integrates with the dome geometry.
An interesting looking lower section under the DJ window and an interesting upper section with the words "the brink" illuminated in some way.
Ideas from other theme camps include:
-EL wire can make a poor mans neon sign (like "Trash Mansion")
-addressable LEDs doing simulated fire like CocoPocoLoco
-Alien Welcoming Committee had an led matrix that also said upcoming djs and their set times (Rory has some screens like this we just haven't learnt how to program them yet)
-snake pit just had a back lit sign, but it was effective.
Other ideas is making it out of metal (this is now overlapping with my other archway idea)

Just going to lentils now for food then Jeff and Tam are calling it a day
Rory has to program it.
Will have lasers doing a chase pattern, some addressable led rings and there's a few EL wire outputs on the same controller so he can do EL chases
I'm thinking I'll attach the last 5 or so masks tonight after dinner 😊

Andrw Waugh Sat 24 Oct 2015 9:54AM
Here's us holding the rest of the small masks in place
The big ones (whole head) masks didn't really work
So thinking we can either wear some or hang them from other poles in a shade structure to help tie the whole thing together thematically.
Will prettify it etc
It has masks all the way around it pointing in all directions
Prioritised putting masks higher up at heights people can see
Need to come up with a way to decorate knee height and below
Maybe tubing or something

Andrw Waugh Sat 24 Oct 2015 11:21AM
Anyone happen to own a low wattage smoke machine?
It'd be cool to drill big holes in this and pump smoke through it...

Andrw Waugh Sat 24 Oct 2015 1:39PM
Still need to send an email to decom with a proper proposal - so far only communication we've had is verbally with me and a quick facebook convo (screencapped above)
If we get the grant then it'd be good to just buy one and build it in there.
$37 from dj city 500watts
if anyone sees any lower wattage units also going for cheaper then post a link
Rory can modify it to have a timer function by hooking a relay up to the remote input and interfacing it with a microcontroller.

I bought a couple of old metal jerry cans at a garage sale a little while ago. Fits the theme and also has utility!!

Jeffrey Reinten Mon 26 Oct 2015 3:48AM
Could you put a picture of the jerrys in the concept reference thread?

Andrw Waugh Mon 26 Oct 2015 3:27AM
Yay :)

Andrw Waugh Wed 28 Oct 2015 2:22AM
ok, I'm writing the email to decom
just want to confirm our costs:
Costs:
Metal $65
Gas Masks $140
Smoke Machine $37
LEDs, Arduino, Lasers ??

Dan Fardon Thu 29 Oct 2015 10:03PM
can't really quote the gas masks as EC already covered that cost for us.... :P cheeky

Andrw Waugh Wed 28 Oct 2015 2:29AM
Hey Shane,
We're keen to take you up on that art grant idea you were floating.
As there's limited time before the event, and to ensure it was feasible in the time frame, we've actually already started constructing it on the weekend and it's looking really good.
The idea is a post apocalyptic totem pole built out of gas masks.
It'll have illumination built into it and it will work as a standalone piece or to decorate one of the central poles in our shade structure (partly paid for by decom - thank you again!).
We want to run addressable LEDs controlled by an arduino microcontroller inside it which Rory has started on.
Rory's also started sequencing some red lasers (pointing at steep angles up or down to avoid eyes) that will be integrated into it as well.
We also plan to integrate a small smoke machine into the base of it, so the gas masks will emanate smoke.
Construction is already underway, we're hoping we can use it for our halloween events this weekend and for the decom party.
Costs:
Metal $65
Gas Masks $140
Smoke Machine $37
LEDs, Arduino, Lasers ??

Rory McMahon Wed 28 Oct 2015 6:06AM
The neopixel rings with current us dollar conversion are worth $98 for 2 little ones and 1 medium sized one
Lasers I don't recall, only a few bucks each I think
Arduino mega is about $15
8+ individual addressable pixels, $22

Andrw Waugh Wed 28 Oct 2015 7:31AM
sweet
that's $377 in total.
I'll ask for that and see what they say I guess

Andrw Waugh Wed 28 Oct 2015 11:03PM

Andrw Waugh Wed 28 Oct 2015 11:03PM
We're a go :)

Andrw Waugh Fri 30 Oct 2015 4:06AM
well, we got paid for it
put it towards the DMF marquee :)

Andrw Waugh Fri 30 Oct 2015 4:06AM
didn't realise..

Borrowing a ring shaped LED panels that can go around the totem at decom from our friend Rory Stallard who runs RawLight. He owes us a few favours from helping him out with labour at some of his gigs and lending him some of our lights a few times.
They're a quarter of a ring each - so you can make a circle with 4 of them. They have built in patterns or they can be DMX'd
We may be able to borrow a few lights from him for Earthcore too, felt there wasn't enough decent static lights at seed for lighting decor, entrance way and other shit around camp

Andrw Waugh Tue 3 Nov 2015 3:02PM
Any ways, I've seen this ring light around a tree on auto in his front yard and it looked sick
I think it will be great with the totem
Less people will trip over it than if we had it surrounded by our led Pars

Two new ideas:
1) cosmic digital doof wizard. A creepy mannequin dressed as a dilapidated techno tree wizard or perhaps a dilapidated priest. The head could be an old cathode ray TV. This website (http://sebpearce.com/bullshit/) generates random new age bullshit. The screen could scroll the text and/or a text to voice generator could read it in a creep voice.
Kind of like a post apocalyptic wasteland church.
Maybe you could confess to it, hit a button and it'd generate a penance.
2) sensory surgical chair. An old dentists chair with a surgical tray, lights and mirrors around it. On the surgical tray is a selection of brutal surgical tools modified to give interesting sensations. Like a bone saw with the serrations replaced with a rubber comb or a low speed drill with light whipping attachment on it.

hahahaha
Love em

Rory McMahon Thu 3 Dec 2015 12:44AM
Godamn I love your ideas Jeff, so good!

Ariane Bingham Thu 3 Dec 2015 2:05AM
haha- i love the chair! i like that its interactive!
Fyodor Krasniy Thu 3 Dec 2015 3:54AM
Waterguns need to be painted rusty!
So grab me anything that we activelly use, and ill paint em up!

Dan Fardon Thu 3 Dec 2015 5:04AM
A dummy with it's head stuck in a mircowave... could use plasma-ball to animate inside of microwave.... A LA "Smokem' if you Got 'em"
