Dec SDC - Proposal 13: Mardi Gras Budget

The Greens have participated in Mardi Gras without fail for as long as I can remember. Participation usually involves holding a stall at Fair Day and putting a Greens entry in the parade.

Estimated costs:

Fair Day rego $279
Parade rego $500
Vehicle hire $300
Generator hire $300
Audio hire $200
Lighting hire $200
Total $1,779

In recent years, up to $2000 has been allowed for Mardi Gras. On some years, by cutting costs and accepting generous donations from members and supporters, we have managed to participate for $1000 or less. This has meant that only $1000 is currently allocated for Mardi Gras in the Greens NSW budget.

Frequent feedback has been critical of the appearance of the Greens' parade entry. While the energy and sincerity of the Greens support for LGBTI people cannot be faulted, the visual impact of the entry is often disappointingly minimal. Our entry very rarely features in media reports, which focus heavily on video and photos.

A budget of up to $3000 would allow the organisers more creative freedom to prepare a parade entry with a higher visual impact than usual. The extra money may be used, for example, for props or costumes.

Labor consistently has an awesome float. I think some costumes and creativity would be awesome. It could be a really great activity to be involved in and increase our membership / membership participation.

Mardi Gras is a great opportunity to engage with some of our core constituents. Given our history in this movement I think we ought to put a bit of money in to wow people as well. Support from me, provided interim treasurer agrees.
