Loomio

Working with the comment edit record

I'm not trying to use Loomio with any formalish organisations at present, but when I was, I remember thinking it would be good to have coordinator/ facilitator tools that allow users to avoid having to sift through edits records that are mostly typo fixes etc when they want remind themselves of the flow of deliberations in a thread that lead to a decision.

What I imagine is some sort of a system where coordinators/ facilitators could either:
* manually remove trivial edits (eg typo fixes) from the (visible) edit record
OR
* the record of an edit is automatically removed after a certain time passes, unless coordinators/ facilitators mark it in some way as an important edit
OR
* coordinators/ facilitators could somehow tag edits as either trivial or important, so only the ones tagged important show up at first glance, but a click somewhere (by any user) expands the whole list
OR
* coordinators/ facilitators could somehow tag edits using a standard set of tag, things like; typo, added link, clarification, added idea, moderated tone. Edits could then be filtered by tag, maybe more trivial ones (typo, added link) auto-hidden by default, with a click to expand (see above).
OR
* all users could somehow tag edits using a standard set of tag, things like; typo, added link, clarification, added idea, moderated tone. Coordinators/ facilitators would have the power to correct tags, whether to fix user error or to correct dishonest tagging. Edits could then be filtered by tag as above.

For more formal groups, if it's not already the case (I've been away for a while), I think it would be good to have a system that can be toggled on and off by coordinators, where:
* editing is disabled after the next comment in the thread is posted
AND/OR
* editing is disabled after a time limit of X minutes has passed

I would like this one:
"coordinators/ facilitators could somehow tag edits as either trivial or important, so only the ones tagged important show up at first glance, but a click somewhere (by any user) expands the whole list"

Thanks Strypey, I'm not able to participate in this conversation until we have feedback from real usage, it's too easy to do too much work on the wrong thing unless it's driven by real usage and feedback.

I realise I come across as shutting you down. Sorry.

It's not what I intended to do, I just reacted because I feel jaded about discussing features without a real use case. But that's not what you said and I think I actually read what you said incorrectly anyway, and that triggered me more. So, very sorry for that.

So as a second approach, I'll say:
Can please I encourage you to draw pictures to supplement your ideas?

Thanks @robertguthrie for checking in with yourself, and letting me (us) know what you need here.

I have to admit I'm not good at visual representation. Perhaps there are other users whose groups would also benefits from the features I'm suggesting, who have the skills to attempt a visual mock-up of how the interface could look?

Checking in with myself, I remember I once spent a lot of frustrating time trying to illustrate a feature suggestion for Loomio, using a proprietary, web-based drawing tool recommended by Loomio devs. My feature was still not implemented, remains so to this day. So, when I see requests to "draw pictures to supplement your ideas", there's a part of my mind that reads it as "we don't want to do this now, and maybe never, instead of wasting our time, please go away and waste a bunch of yours".

I know this isn't what you're saying. But I'm not going to be doing any drawing, sorry. I've shared my ideas in a medium I'm confident with (words), and if the feedback is not useful to you, then I accept that.

Robert Guthrie

Sounds like we're ok.

Thanks for your contributions. Looking forward to your feedback on the stuff we're just about to release.
